Potty Problems | Autism PDD

He doesn't sound like he's ready for the potty. It took Payne a while to get used to the idea that it was ok to go potty places other than home. I would talk to the BCBA at the school though. Thanks for the advice. I finally had the strength to talk with the unit coordinator at school. She then admited that this placement might have been a mistake. Either the teacher will not be so tough on him with the potty or he might be moved to another class.

Hi, My son is 3 1/2 years old. Pdd diagnosed. He is going to summer school. They had to Change his teacher, since apparently the one he had was too mushy. They said he needs more structure boot camp style. I find that he works better with someone who is warm yet can be firm. This new teacher is cold and tough. Anyway they started potty training him. It has been 3 weeks now. He cries everyday I take him to school. No potty, no school etc.  Then after I struggle to get him there , he is having problems with the potty. The school said he was ready.  Evan has been resisting the potty. He has actually figured out that if he doesnt eat or drink , no potty!!!  It has been 2 weeks and he has resisted all food and drink at school.  Then he comes home and wants to eat everything. If that wasnt bad enough He then gets tired and during nap time wants to sleep alot longer. Evan resists getting up . I dont know what to do.  He is fine with the steps of potty training at home that they gave me. He has never peed in the potty at home , just stares at the toilet and counts to 30 . The teacher said he peed the 1 st week 3 times.  He is going to have this teacher all next year. I am worried since I dont want him not to be able to learn and focus , because he will be too hungry or tired.  Any advice is appreciated. Does anyone have kids who did this? Should I talk with the school and have him placed in another class?

Also another reason they said he would be good for this class  is that it would be better role models for him. I find out that some kids in the class dont speak english .aside from the group that is non-verbal. My son was non -verbal until 8 months ago. There are only 7 other kids in the class.  Not that I would mind if Evan was bilingual I just want him to learn english first.

Thanks,

Jeff

For my son, not being able to pee when taken to the toilet was a sensory issue -- gravitational insecurity when sitting on the adult-sized toilet, and potty chairs were too small for him at age 4.  We solved this by letting him sit facing the tank.  He held on and felt safe, and we had a breakthrough.

Good luck with everything!

Call an IEP meeting to discuss this with the school.  Obviously the potty situation in the classroom is not working for your child for whatever reason.  He is dealing with it by refusing to eat and drink and that is just not acceptable....something needs to be figured out.  Not only is it affecting his performance in school, but it's also carrying over at home.  When you have the meeting you can go ahead and discuss your concerns about the type of class room he is in.  When they said they wanted Evan to have good role models they were probably referring to him having neurotypical classmates to model after (to learn social skills) rather than referring to what language they spoke.  Either way, if you are uncomfortable with his current placement, you should definitely call a meeting and address the issue head on.

My son is PDD-NOS and he is just over 3.  He is also resisting potty training.  He CAN do it...he just doesn't want to right now.  He is stubborn and obstinate, and it has to be on his terms.  I know it is frustrating, but hang in there and eventually it will happen.
