word scrambling

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

I have posted before that I have a five year old dd.  I think she is on the spectrum but we have no dx.

I am wondering about my dd's odd sentence structure.  Almost all her sentences are out of order.  Is this a common problem for children with autism?

She says things like "what this is?"  or "mower-lawn."  She is very scrambled.

Her speech started out normal.  Meaning, first words like mama and balloon came before her first b-day.  I noticed when she was two though, she was still just labeling things, not communicating.  She picked up echolalia at three and this lasted a good six months or so.  She reversed pronouns during this time too.  Three and a half until now has been steady progress.  As of now, she is talking a lot, making conversation and telling us things spontaniously.  She just has a lot of grammar mistakes and her sentence structure is all over the place.

My question is, does this indicate asd?  A specific language disorder?  Does it work its self out?

She was evaluated before and just given a label of language disorder.  We tried to get her therapy and she was always turned away.  For some reason, when ever she takes a speech and language test, she comes out looking fine.

I was surprised she was not given an asd dx.  The reasoning was her joint attention, its age appropriate and her eye contact is also age appropritate.  They didnt feel she had enough social deficits.  I was told that if she had asd, her social deficits would be the primary deficit and the language issues would be secondary.  Is this true?

If she has a "language disorder" that was diagnosed-----she will not be turned away for therapy--unless it was your insurance. She should be getting it thru school or EI.

If you haven't already--get her eval'd by a private therapist. And ask for a language eval--not just speech. I personally feel that schools SLP are not as "qualified" as private. Maybe because they don't do eval's all the time. Or maybe because our district is really bad!

I think if her main signs is the grammar mistakes---it could be normal for that age? My kids never did that. I think maybe my HFA did --but not that much.

My son is 7.5y and his main problem is language delay and behavior. Socially--he has friends--he says. And now--this summer, I am noticing that maybe he is starting to become more noticably "different" around kids his age. He is in their face and plays---by jumping on them and getting too close.

I would get her eval'd by a "team" specializing in ASD.

Even now at 7.5y--my son still gets pronouns mixed up--but only when he is getting frustrated or mad!

Just my .02 cents:)

.. but ...if she had autism you would notice much more than just a language disorder..does she point, engage you with toys or try to get your attention? Does she have any obsessions or repetitive things she does? Does she have any sensory issues? How are her behaviors in public? Does she have any sleep issues or food issues? Does she seek out peers and play appropriate with them and toys?  Does she have pretend skills? Does she have odd fears or any hand flapping...lining up of toys?? All of these sx are indicators of ASD and should be checked out by an expert in autism.

..From your post she seems to have a language disorder that should fix itself very well with good speech therapy. If you feel in your gut that some of the above issues are going on than I would get her evaluated asap by a developmental pediatrician who can detect autism:) Best of luck!
