ABA?? Having second thoughts?? | Autism PDD

Share

We found our ABA therapists and BCBA through~

"FEAT" (Families for effective autism treatment) online in our area..they list providers for every state..from there you just email the therapists to set up interviews..ABA was excellent for behaviors and teaching our dd how to attend and follow rules, do demands and task outside her own thinking:) It brought her from nonverbal passive aloof child to a very active sassy and smart, creative little girl:)

I would have your little one evaluated by dev. pediatrician..I have never met a mom who's instincts wasnt right on...follow your gut & best of luck!

I have always been very anti-ABA for my son (not anti-ABA overall though... just for my son).  It just never seemed like the right fit for him.  He's very high functioning, learns quickly (even through just watching others), and his "only" issues were social... so I assumed that ABA wasn't right for him.

Well here we are 2 years post original diagnosis (and 2 diagnosis "removals" since then) with a child that they are calling "subclinical" Aspergers.  I know that will change... when he's older he'll get that flat out Aspergers diagnosis... no doubt in my mind.  But I wonder... was I wrong??  Should we have been doing ABA??  Should we now??  Is it too late??

We are having new behavioral issues that I haven't seen before and I am wondering if some of the consistancy (and strict nature) of ABA might help??

Then I look at my 2 year old and wonder should we "try" it with him??  I've been told repeatedly that he's "fine" by a number of professionals that work with Jason... but I can't shake that feeling in the pit of my stomach which tells me things are NOT fine... I wouldn't have these questions if he was I dont' think.  We dno't know ABA so it woudl be starting over fresh.  I know Floortime and RDI principles and can do that easily with my 2 year old... but ABA that would be a whole new world.

missnippy - We have a waiver program, so our Department of Health and Family Services provided us with a list of ABA providers.  2 of our ABA therapists are Board Certified Behavior Analysts.  Here is a link to the BACB's web site.  You can use it to find a BCBA where you live.  Click on certificant registry and then enter the information about where you live.
