non-toy toys | Autism PDD

Jason's favorite things to play with are sticks, straws, and silverware, but especially the spoons.

Clack, clack, clack.  That's what he does with them.  He also examines them very carefully, holding them up to the light in an "x".

Oh, and soda cans, but they have to be full and unopened, and he'll line them up, turning them so the tabs all face the same direction, or he'll line them up in diagonal rows.  I thought at first that he was just bunching them up sort of randomly, but when I looked closer, I realized he'd grouped them in horizontal lines.

UMBRELLAS

BLENDERS

Her Giga ball came today..her birthday is tomorrow:) We will have to take it to the gas station to fill it up for her:)

I will take a pic as soon as it is up and ready to roll and post! :)

Ali will play with toys....but will spend most of the time lining them up.  She also loooooooves playing with rocks, sticks, specs of dirt she finds on the floor, my bras (she loves them...very silly), cat/dog toys, mirrors, water, nail brushes, books, cups, flashlights, strings, umbrellas...and more.

scotch tape, gourds, paper and string

Power strips, cords, plugs of any kind - those are my son's favorite toys and he has his own box of them and plays with them (supervised) everyday!  We even bought him a couple of outlets from Home Depot.  Fortunately, he plays with real toys as well, but the electrical stuff is his favorite.

heh, mine when i was little was a calculator I received when i was 9 and still use to this day, also a book on the universe, maps, office supplies, keys, tools,

ya, pretty much similar list as everyone elses. hehMy son went through a tape measure phase- he wouldn't touch the toy ones.  He even slept with a tape measure!!

Sticks are big here - you can do a LOT with them. Pretty much anything stick-like is used in a different manner than what it is intended (sometimes as weapons!). A toy broom is big as well - not necessarily to sweep - but to swing around and pretty much just hold a lot.

B's favorite is pans and lids.  Jacob likes flashlights and silverware.  Neither is big on toys. I'm glad to know that my 10 yr old isn't the only one who never liked toys, When his birthdays come around it's a challenge to think of things people can buy him. He likes just about everything but toys I sometimes tell him to go play video games, LOL. The only toy he will play with is cars, otherwise if it's something he can bang or whip around that's what he would choose. He'd rather look at a wall than play with toys.

Not even just toys, but diapers too! Target now carries Pampers size 7 (for 4 and 5 year olds who have not yet potty-trained.)

Aethan is very much in to plastic easter eggs, bubble wrap and my stethescope and blood pressure cuff.

Every day is an adventure!

Oh and happy bday to your oldest WiMom and Sarah!!

emerald_52139288.8547685185I was just paging through a pottery barn kids catalogue and saw that they
have superman and batman sheet sets and room decorations.
I immediatly thought how many of our kids would flip for that.
It seems like there is this whole market of non-toy toy items for kids,
that to me seems like it is geared towards the special interests of asd
kids. Like all the kids-eyewitness books that have special topics like 'US
presidents' and 'Civil War'. Or the 3D puzzles that lets you rebuild
authentic historic castles. Though I think many of our kids love stuff that
the toy industry has not really thought to market yet like sticks or
plumbing supplies.('')

My ds's favorite non-toy toy items have been fact books on money and
natural disasters, a first aid kit, a calculator and office supplies of any
kind. Never much interest in 'real' toys.
Any favorite non-toy toys your kids have?Calculators are big here too. Along with hair clips of various shapes and sizes, shoe laces, for lining up straight, of course, and the ever popular, remote controls.Calculator, paper bathroom cups, a paint brush, binoculars, a small red
book "Crime & Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and sticks!!!

I can only imagine what will be on her list as she gets older!!    Elle, yes, he loves those tiny dixie cups.  Hmmm We have a group of budding accountants.Sarah got a birthday package today from grandma..2 sketchbooks, how to draw animals book , art kit with paints and pencils..she has been busy all day long doing pictures:) A clipboard with a roller of 100ft. of paper attached to it so you can take it to restaurants and visits:) Perfect for my little artist:) Calculators are HUGE here too

My youngest son can amuse himself for a long time with a tape measure and a piece of rope.  There's a lot you can do with these 2 items!

Wi mom, I can imagine, we can get a full 30 min from just one shoelace

A big happy B-day to your son and Shellys daughter.

In our house it's not only our ASD son that loves "non toy" toys, but our NT daughter loves them ,too. These are the biggies in our house, flashlights, calculators, office supplies, weather radio, , natural disaster books, history books, space books, maps, road atlas, and forget about spongebob , my two could watch the Weather Channel, History Channel and Discovery Channel all day long if I'd let them!  When they were younger my pots and pans held a place near and dear to their hearts.
