We were going to try applesauce but he use to eat it when he was smaller but he won't touch it now. She tried a little last night just to see if she coud get him to taste it but no way. He was not going to do that.
Thanks for all the ideas and encouragement. I am so tired already and I am just beginning. I wish candy did work for him but he has never eaten alot of candy. Strange but he has never eaten alot of candy and will not drink soft drinks. My mom tried to put it in peanut butter this morning and she called and said as soon as he put it in his mouth he tasted it and would not eat it. We use applesauce for Skylar's meds, and it works every time. He takes FocalinXR in the morning and Clonodine at night and all I have to do is sprinkle it over the applesauce and he is good to go. With his Risperdal (liquid, but taste really horrible)I can just quirt it in a teaspoon of applesauce and he gives me no problems taking it.
I have a 5 year old little boy Dylan and he was just diagnosed with autism a few months ago. They recommended us put him on some medication for his hyperness and that might help calm him down some and he may learn some. He will not sit still for you to do anything. Well, the doctor prescribed Ritalin LA and this morning was the first morning my mom tried to give the medication to him. The doctor suggested we break the capsule and sprinkle it on something he likes. I have to work and my mom and dad is keeping him right now because I can not find a day care that will keep him. I called this morning to see how he did and well my mom said he did terrible. She tried with ice cream and she said he just started spitting when she tried and it took her and my dad to do it and she still does not know how much medication he really got into his system. I am just tired. I was just hoping he would take it really well but I don't know why because he does not take medicine really well. Any suggestions how we can do this?
Thanks for your help in advance.
We used a spoonful of frosting!
The meds stuck to it the best and because it was harder, it formed pretty easily around the meds...easier than pudding or icecream...we did struggle for awhile until we found the frosting...we also tried drinks but half the time he wouldn't finish it or the med would stick to the cup rather than get drunk down.
Eventually too, we explained to him the best we could about why he needed the meds (for seizures) and how it kept him healthy.
I can honestly say this is one area that we don't struggle with anymore! He no longer needs the frosting either...we just put the spinkles on the spoon and he gulps them right down with a big drink of water.
GOOD LUCK
I mixed Sarah's fish oil in a med cup with a squirt of syrup... and then I drew it up in oral syringe and came up from behind her and leaned over while she was watching TV or concentrating on something and just put in her mouth and squirted it:) Good luck:)
There are a lot of tips on giving medicine under this topic on our forum:

I'm sure you'll eventually find something that works for you. Hang in there, and work closely with your doctor on getting the dosage right.
Good luck with everything.
We use Methylin which is a competitor to Ritalin, but comes in chewable tablets. See if the doc can get you chewables.
We give Cole his "pay attention medicine" along with two Smarties or two gummy bears or two mini marshmallows. You have to make sure he eats them all and doesn't sneak them out of his mouth, but the candy chasers work 9/10 times.
