My husband and I are looking to move to Southern CA in about a year or so. Can anyone let me know how services are there? We are looking in the La Jolla area and other parts of San Diego. We are willing to look in the malibu area as well. As long as it is close to the ocean and clean we are good! am currently living in Long Beach, I also recomend the TACA site as well.
They have quite a few chapters. As for the areas if you are flexible, I would
contact a special education attorney, to see what school districts are doing
in terms of services. (LAFEAT and TACA have them both on their resource
list) North San Diego County is beautiful, Del Mar, Cardiff and Solana Beach
are worth looking at. I would check out what services the school can
provide.

smaller than the behemoth that is LAUSD, the special ed dept is MUCH
easier to navigate, and MUCH friendlier.

I have been really happy with their pre-school services so far, but am just
beginning to educate myself about elementary school, so I can share as I
learn.

One thing that CA has going for it is the "regional" centers who contract
and provide supplemental services like respite, summer camps, private
social skills groups, etc.
Due to the the rising rates of dx, many centers are being forced to
concentrate the bulk of their services for more moderate to severe cases,
but still approve on a case by case basis. Being "regional", the
effectiveness and "customer satisfaction" with these centers can vary. So
be sure to learn about your School District and your Regional center.
There is a non profit enterprise here in Santa Monica called the "special
needs resource center" One of the women who runs it is a private
education counselor and is REALLY knowledgeable about "westside"
schools both in SMMUSD and LAUSD. PM me if you want more info!Thanks for all the input. I will start my search now. Our son loves to be outside and this is the best state for us to be in as far as weather goes. We live in 4 seasons here and I fear the winter.
