refuse to drink or eat for 4 days | Autism PDD

Get to a good occupational therapist or ABA therapist and ask about feeding therapy.  Search this site for "feeding," too.  Don't go the feeding tube route until you try behavioral therapy. Also, a doctor usually hesitates to do a feeding tube until the child's life is in danger.  A tube might not be an option at all.  Please try to find a good autism physician.

My son refuses to eat or drink for 4 days out of the week.  We force feed him pedialyte and applesause w/mineral oil and prune juice to help with bowel movement.  He has bowel movement irregularly 2-3x/week and sometimes has to strain.

Since he had a stomach virus 3 weeks ago, he has eaten 3-4 days a week.  And has been taken off all biomedical suuplements.  But is still on a gluten-free casein-free diet.  He used to be a good eater till now.

Next stop is the hospital with feeding tubes.

Are there any mothers out there who had similiar problems?  If there are please, write.
May McCabe39287.3859606481I would take him to a GI doc like Amberwaves stated..he may have an obstruction or kink in his bowels which can be life threatenening..I have a cousin that has  bowel problems and gets obstructions all the time. Good luck! This may be out of my experience, but when my son was two and a half he refused to eat at home. He wanted to eat out, and riding in the car was a big sensory activity for him. He craved movement, so we put a swing in the basement and got him to start eating downstairs. We slowly moved meals upstairs again. Not eating was a way to ensure a car ride, and a nice meal at McD's too.Take him to the Dr to make sure something is not wrong with his insides. My daughter won't eat if gasy or full of poo. Maybe try prune juice and fresh fruits

I think he should be taken to a doctor or hospital for a medical work up; he could have something wrong him with that has nothing to do with autism or his GI tract.

If that's all clear then it sounds like the treatment plan needs to be re-evaluated whether it's dietary or behaviourally.

Whatever the cause it doesn't sound healthy and someting that should be left for any long term.

OZZIE-ROZIES-MA39287.4979398148I just read 'George and Sam' by Charlotte Moore , she has two boys on
the spectrum. Her son George will only eat about twice a week. I don't
think the book offers any great advice but just so you know you are not
alone. She feels that as long as her son does not start getting sick (he is
very skinny but healthy) she will not push it since that seemed to make it
worse.
Maybe also check into the recent thread called phobia - I think it is not
uncommen for our kids to become afraid of things after a traumatic event
- maybe the stomach flu triggered a phobia of food/eating?Thanks to everyone who replied.  My son is eating 5 days in a roll and pooped each day.  His speech therapist thinks its behavioral and is helping me with feeding.
