My 11 year old boy (turned 11 July 2) is just shy of 5'7" and weighs about 145, all solid, not an ounce of flab on his body! Plus he has a large frame. His doc said for his height and frame, he's really just about where he should be. I swear he is constantly tripping over his own feet, because they've grown right along with him. He's continuously mistaken for a young teenager.
When he was younger I used to carry around his birth certificate because he'd want to eat off the kids menu and we'd be told there was an age limit. He's been off the charts several times over the years in regards to his height and weight for his age. He comes by it naturally though, his dad is 6'2" and I'm just this side of 5'10".
My dh is 6'4", and I am 5'4". At birth, my son hurt a little more because his head was one centimeter larger than my daughter. He has been 42lbs for a couple years now, but growing tall. I'd say more average. People think my daughter is much older. All my kids were about 8lbs 2oz-8lbs 12ozs at birth.
The funny thing is my brother has two NT kids that are toddlers with ginormous heads!!My son was a premie at 5pds 3 ounces. In no time at all he was 95% for weight AND height. This lasted several years. Now at 14 yrs. he is at 75% for weight and Height. He had a big head too.Payne is at 7 about 4'2 and 65-70#, was 20 1/2 cm and 8#7oz at birth...normal sized melon according to neuro. Was at 95% for height / weight.
I've begun to wonder about this too. Although we must keep in mind that in general all kids are growing larger each generation. Grandparents are ofter under 5 feet and the grandkids are 6 feet right?
Anyway.... My just turned 6 year old son is 4 feet 3 inches. Weighs 100 lbs. Wears a 12-14 clothes and a boys youth shoe of size 4 (size 5 becomes mens).
I've been considering talking him to a developmental pediatrician becaue the hair pattern on his legs looks a littel mature to me. His back and chest is really broad. His legs are solid like tree trunks and he in one solid and muscular boy! THe appetite of a man. And his hands with fingers spread go past my palms and into my own fingers.
However, that been said. I'm his mother at 5'9", his dad is 6'. HIs Uncle is 6'3", His Aunt is 6'. My Aunt is 6', my Grandfather was 6'2", my mother is 5'7". SO tall does run in the family.
sounds about the norm - Challenger...lots of tall people in your families. My dh is 6', I'm 5'7''.. my side women are 5'5'' - 5'9'' while the men are hanging around 6'...on dh side the men are over 6' and the women are about my height. The dr is saying Payne will definitely be over 6' tall like his grandfathers, cousins, etc.
challenger,
I would still take him in. I'm 5'7" and my dh is 5'10". He has two brothers that are 6'4" and I don't know my hx because I'm adopted.
That being said, my ds is 4'2" tall at 6 years old and he is 50 pounds. He doesn't have much fat on him, but he is not a string bean either. So, he is one inch shorter than your ds but half of his weight! And I should add that my ds eats more than either of us at meals. He just is always moving and burns off most of what he eats, I think!
Anyway, with the weight, I would be concerned - even if he is very solid. 100 pounds at 6 years old is off the charts, I would guess. He is tall, but the weight is still disproportionate. I would get him checked out, just to be on the safe side. There may be some metabolic things going on or growth hormone issues...
Edited to add: The other things sound like a VERY early puberty - which is why I think it essential you take him in. He is developing into a man MUCH earlier than he should, it sounds like!
Thanks Snoopywoman and Payne's mom. My boy has the same exact shape and structure as his dad. If you see them both in their underwear facing the same direction, you have to laugh how exact the replication is.
There have been times where I've considered meds. But the neurologist took one look at him, any any meds he's recommend would have made my son gain weight and the neuro, sais since he's already so large...
I have to lock the fridge and watch him constantly, because he climbs the cupboards for food. If I'm, not looking he'll make himself an english muffing and butter or 2. Or will hack off a hunk of cheese from the cheese bar, or will eat a whole box of cookies, or will eat 3-4 yougurts. I believe it to be a bit of OCD. He always feels like he has to polish off a bag of milk (1 liter bag - in Canada). So I'm hoping once he's in school full time and there isn't food available in just the other room. He'll get his apetite in order.
I usually during the school year also have him in, swimming, ice skating and soccer. And thought of signing him up for trampoline classes as well. To burn off the extra energy and calories.
I would definitely take him in to check for possible Prader-Willi syndrome. I would also google that and see if you think it might fit your child.
I think your neurologist is dead-on with not doing meds as those almost definitely won't help with weight gain and will probably cause more. What kind of meds was he considering putting him on and for what issues?
Jaden is big. She will be four on sunday and she weighs 45 pounds. She is 52 (?) inches tall.fordexpr1 - Me too! I always said that I make babies in the 3-6 month size because that's what both my kids came out of the womb wearing!
After my first one was 10 pounds, 2.4 ounces - they had to look around and find size 1 diapers because they could not fit newborns on him. I didn't know until 2 years later that newborn diapers had cut-outs for the umbilical cord before it falls off! LOL
When I was in labor with my dd (I was being induced due to gestational diabetes) - I told the nurse to go find some size 1 diapers. They had estimated her on ultrasound to be 10 1/2 pounds when I was 36 weeks pregnant. She pooh-poohed it and said she was sure I wouldn't need it. Well, didn't she have to go scrambling to find size 1 diapers when dd topped the charts at 10 pounds 4.2 ounces!
Chris was 9 lbs. 11.5 oz, and 19 inch. at birth
Billy was 9 lbs. 4 oz and 21 inch at birth
I have big babies
I read this study also. My little one however, is pretty much on the average size. At just turned three he is 38" tall and 35 pounds.
Sharlet is big for her age.My boys, 1 ASD and 1 NT are same size, same weight. They are consistently 75th percentile for height and 50th% for weight. They are built just like my husband. I don't see any correlation between ASD and size.My son is small for his age but he was a preemie. And has been in and out of the hospital a lot since birth.he turned two in may and is 26 lbsI was only looking into any meds that "might" help. At the time he was doing a fair bit of "verbal stimming" and "vocal stimming" I wondered if it could be tourettes. My neuro. didn't think so because he had no other tics. etc. The only med he could think of for his case, for attention span was the respiridone and ruled it out because of weight gain and increased appetite.
That being said. Many of his verbal and vocal stims while they do still exist have lessened. He's much more aware of what he's saying and doing than before. If you ask him to stop he can (temporarily). He's speaking more, answering more questions, attending better at school and therapy, although does still need physical breaks.
So all in all many improvements naturally.
I don't know if it's related to autism or not, but my son has always been large, too. He was 30# at 13 months. He's always bigger than the other kids. Skylar has always (well until the last 6 months) been a big child. He only weighed 7lbs 5oz at birth, but it didn't take long for him to get huge. He had absolutely no fat, just a large structure. But lately due to the Focalin XR he lost about 15 lbs. or so and got taller. As far as head size, I am not sure, but both Zoe and Skylar have always had heads larger than other children their ages. Zoe is 7 1/2 w/ADD and eats like a horse but yet only weighs 50 lbs. Skylar on the other hand hardly eats at all.Well, both my ds and my dd have large heads. Always have. One has autism, the other is NT. I have a larger-than-normal head but the only way you would know it is when I'm trying on hats - it's not noticeable.
My ds was born big as was my dd. Both were over 10 pounds - I had gestational diabetes with dd, and probably had it with ds - but was undiagnosed.
Currently, ds is 6 and is about 50 inches tall, but weighs about 50 pounds as well. He's not at all overweight - but not completely string-bean either. He eats like a horse - will try almost anything, but not necessarily finish it
So, I don't have any idea how this child could not eat very much and be so big. If I were the parents, I would be having some tests done - particularly in terms of growth hormones. It sounds like they are a little out of whack. But, I'm not a doctor - I would definitely take him to one though!
Hope this helps!
At 2 years of age, my oldest son was 34 lbs. and 36" tall. My youngest son was 30 lbs, 9 oz. and 35" tall.
Both of my boys are still tall and fit. However, they do fall in the upper percentiles for their size.
Thanks!!! Very interesting! Hummmmmmm..........
Do any of you know anything about a disorder where the child is way bigger than they are supposed to be, don't even have a clue as what it's called.
This child has a cousin with this and also is autistic.
Marfan syndrome? That's where you get excessive long bone growth ...I don't think physical size has anything to do with autism. Look at the parents. If they are big, the child will likely be big. Obesity CAN be caused by meds, but this child is young, so that is not the issue. Head circumference is different and has nothing to do with the rest of the physical size of the child. It IS true that head circumference tends to be large at about this age, but it decreases as the child gets past todderhood.
My son is physically large, but he comes by it "honestly." He's 16 and is 6'2.5" and his male cousins are all taller than he is! He also had a HUGE head in toddlerhood, but part of that is due to a family tendency toward large heads (I can't find a hat that fits -- ever). He's fat from Risperdal, too.
Yeah.. I don't think physical size has anything to do with autism either. Daniel has stayed between 75-90% for height and weight since the hospital (9lb 14.6oz). Oddly enough, he's always been between 40-50% for head.. Don't know how that happened... We often have been told that people thought he was 4-5 yrs old, and he is just a few months over 3..this little boy whom I have in my daycare that I've been posting about just so happens to be a really big child. He'll be 2 at the end of Aug. and he weighs almost 40 lbs. I've known him since he was an infant (only been in my daycare since Dec. 2006) and he's always been big. Now, I am not trying to sound mean about any of this, so don't take me the wrong way.
I read in an article that autistic children tend to have a larger brain mass and bigger head circumferance. But nothing about the actual size of the children. Do any of you know if there is any truth to this or not? If this little boy wasn't such a picky eater, then I wouldn't think as much about his size, but sometimes he'll go all day and not eat more than a few bites. And he also will do this a his home too, so I just wonder how he stays so big.
I just thought I'd ask if any of you have thoughts on this and how your child's size is compared to age and amount they eat.
I may not make any sense at all, but oh well-- I'm just crazy!!!
Ali has always been tall 75th-100th percentile...but skinny 5th-40th(briefly at her heaviest) percentile. Her head was in the 100th percentile the 1st two years...now her head is average. Oh...and at 4 years old, she only weighs 34 pounds/All three of my boys have always been bigger (I think in the 95th percentile). Chris is obcessed with food...so he is overweight due to meds and obcession. But they are all tall and big for their age.The head thing concerns me only because Sarah has always had a unusually large head..hard to fit tshirt over it ...she is 47 inches and @ 52 pounds so pretty average in weight..but that head is as big as mine~lumpy too! I am thankful she has so much hair to cover it:) My son will be 4 in a couple weeks and he weighn 39 lbs.. He seems big not sure how tall but i know he is tall for his age.. i think like96 % for height.. I don't know anyone who is fat with a form of autism. If anything skinny. My daughter is the 3 tallest in her class and is skinny.

This child may have a eating problem or thyroid problem.
[/QUOTE]
Eating problem was my fist thought too when he started coming to my house in Dec. But he just doesn't eat hardly anything. Some days, he won't eat at all.
WHO KNOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Adam has a small head and small everything really..LOL He is approx 35 lbs and he is 5 years old. I worry a lot about how tiny he is. His dad is 5' 9 and I am 5'4. We were both small as children so I just figured that was why he is so little.
Karrie
I forgot where but i just read about a study that said that kids withPrader-willi syndrome is another genetic autism-like disorder, in which the children eat obsessively, and become obese, but often short in stature.
Don't ask me why I remembered that...
lol , ShelleyR!!!
Yeah, I honestly don't think that being bigger has anything to do with autism, but I don't know as much about it as you all probably do. I'm just learning and trying to read all I can to be able to better understand him.
I still couldn't tell ya even if I heard what the name of that growth disorder is! But thanks, foxl!!! And that very well could be it. I don't think this child does have that though.
Great talking to you guys!!!
savannah is....40 pounds...and almost 4 feet...AT 4....but her dad and I are both on the tall side... for as small as she was when she was born it was interesting to see how fast she caught up..
Now, at three, he's 29lbs and 36-37 inches (can't get an accurate measurement, he fights too much!). He really plateaued in terms of weight gain, and his head circumference is 50cm, which is in the normal range, I gather. He was holding steady at 25lbs until recently, though. In just 10 days, he's put on two pounds, and I don't know how, because he's really gone off his food. It's not our scale, either, because he's been weighed at the doctor's office three times since the 10th, and it shows the same thing.
*shrug*
Both my kids have always been small. My 5yr old dd is 37lbs and my 3 yr old ds is 33lbs. They are skinny kids.
Okay, I just googled it myself and perhaps that isn't the case with your ds. Usually, those kids have less muscle tone and incomplete sexual development. That doesn't sound like your son.
But, I would still have him looked at - the locking of the refrigerator and his obsession with getting food is definitely concerning. Was the neurologist thinking of meds for OCD?
Our son is on risperdal and ALWAYS STARVING, but we have dealt with this by ONLY having in the house:
all sorts of fruits,
frozen vegetables,
no sugar added peanut butter,
celery,
breads,
low fat crackers,
frozen 'super' pretzels,
fruit snacks 'gummies' for treats
NO: donuts,cookies, candy, chips.
He still eats tons, but the foods are healthy!
