As NorwayMom said, you must find a Dr. that really knows Asperger's well to get a Dx. Don't be surprised if the School does not get it either. Please read (Parenting Your Asperger Child) by Alan Sohn, and Cathy Grayson. I found it in the Library. There are many subtitles in this book on how Aspergers can present itself. And yes you can have duel Dx, but Aspergers is usually the culprit of many different looking Dx. I wish you luck. I am just awating the other dx of aspbergers. a counslor that we have been going to seems to think that he has attachment disorder, bipolar disorder and other things
But to me it sounds like someone trying to kluge together a bunch of symptoms of behavioral diagnoses, for something that may be neurological in origin ...
My little cousin got ADHD, ODD, SID,NVLD.. and dyslexia labels when he was younger and now at 12 he just got truely diagnosed aspergers which encompasses all other labels he got but now they can address the social aspects that got overlooked because he is a very gifted~straight A's child. Forgiving for saying this but bipolar disorder is normally genetic. I know a family and all the women are bipolar .Not a joke from great granny down. Only one male is bipolar out of all those bipolar females. Has this child been checked for other neurological disorders like ADHD. Also look at family history and find out those secrets ask your aunts and cousins. MY one family branch has 4 neurological disorders. NONE of them have ADHD or BIPOLAR. They just have to have harder neurological disorders. It is still a dx mix up in our family. MY son got ASD ruled out at 3.5y--but they found his language disorder, but at 4y--got anxiety, behavioral disruptive disorder and the language disorder. At 5y--bipolar, anxiety and language disorder and possible ASD. At 6y--Bipolar, HFA, anxiety and language. At 7y----Bipolar---ruled out
There is bipolar in Dh's family---but---it's Dh's female cousin and uncle(her dad). Dh recently got dx'd with Aspergers and has depression/anxiety----but I wonder if thats because of Jacob and that he got dx'd. MY 11y is bipolar, ADD, LD's, anxiety. It seems to me that the bipolar is too far down the family tree---but I know it could happen. Dh'd mom is depression/anxiety and his dad is undx'd---but I assume it would be something---ADD-type. Dh's nephew is anxiety and severe ADHD. I believe ALL these disorders are related. And I've heard that bipolar and ASD is very close in relation. Like my son----he was dx'd bipolar---but he really was ASD. Luckily we have a great psychiatrist who deals with childhood bipolar and he also is part of the dxing team for the U of WA in the autism center.
