Here's an interview with Sigourney Weaver on her experiences researching and playing the role of an autistic woman in "Snow Cakes", which is written by the mother of a 9 year old autistic boy.

Jenny McCarthy's website was supposed to be up and running in June but isn't.

Thanks, I would love to see this film!

On Rosie O's blog yesterday someone asked her about remembering lyrics and she mentioned it being a spectrum issue, so today someone asked her if she meant ASD spectrum and her response was "spectrum-ish".

Whatever that means????

Jenny Mccarthy is a indigomom? That whole way of looking at stuff is just
way to new age/wishful thinking/missing the point to me. But I think it's
the new wave. I went to the bookstore yesterday to see if the had
wrightslaws special ed book and in the autism section they had 10 books,
five on them being on 'indigo children'. I almost complained. I should
have.
Disclaimer ; not meaning to offend annyone who is a believer of the
indigo children. Everyone is completly entiteled to their own way of
thinking and please feel free to educate me on your point of view.I looked at the Indigo children's books...a little too out there for me. But open to others opinions as well:)
The link now says that the Indigo Moms website will not be returning ????She is doing some stuff for TACA which is a site I use quite often. It is a
good resource for me as I am in SoCal. It sounds like she is getting her son
the help that he needs and she is helping others by raising money. Now if
Angelina Jolie were to adopt a child with autism that will be a big story.Stallone Has an Autistic Child. I believe he might be in his lte teens/ early 20's now.

Twisted Sister donated ,000 in Christmas album proceeds to Autism Speaks.  Read about it here (includes a video clip).

Here's the latest on Jenny from www.autism.about.com:

Jenny McCarthy, Bunny for Autism

No one but Jenny could pull this one off.

As many of you know, Jenny McCarthy is the mother of a little boy with autism - and has been working to raise funds and awareness for autism for years. Last night, she became the Las Vegas Playboy Club's first celebrity dealer, putting her more than ,000 in tips toward the cause of autism. According to TMZ.com:

Jenny became the first ever celebrity dealer, working the tables from 9:00 PM to midnight, much to the delight of several male gamblers -- who probably yelled "hit me!" with particular delight.

When her shift was up, Jenny retired her bunny costume and hit up Moon Nightclub, where she partied with friends at a VIP table right on the dance floor.

What's your take on this particular approach to fundraising? Is it a fun, Jenny-worthy way to raise cash for a good cause? Or would you rather see Jenny acting as a more appropriate role-model, perhaps actually engaging with her son as she promotes her cause and her career?

ICK.  Not to my taste at ALL.  She is a MOM, for cryin out loud!I saw the story about Jenny McCarthy the other day.  I personally have no problem with it.  However, I do know she indicated on the View that she wrote a book about autism that hasn't come out yet.  I may be completely off here, but I get the feeling that a lot of this is about self-promotion, and not raising awareness about autism.I dont know...it seems that I have read some where that autistic children have some kind of spiritual traits or  something that others associate with spirituality...just because it is  not "scientific" does not mean that there isn't something to it. I  do know that many children can "see" things that adults can't  see and then they lose that ability. I truly think that my child "knows" things that are paranormal, but that is about it.  Why not possible?

I personally do not care for her just because of her image/rep. as a not so pure woman....just my feelings.  I think, of course if she did something as you mention with her child, it would be better for the cause and help her image as a mom...but I also think, hey money for the cause is great...so long as it was obtained in a legal manner, it is great that she is giving it to the cause and her celebrity helps promote others to do the same.  She's pretty active in the so cal autism community, and I have heard she has
her child in really good programs.

If I could raise ,000 wearing a bunny suit dealing cards, I would. I say
good for her. Her spiritual beliefs don't bug me too much, as she seems to
acknowlege autism as a real disorder.

I dont see anything wrong with it. Im sure she isnt doing it all for publicity being that shes directly affected by autism. And just cuz shes a mom theres no reason she cant dress up in a bunny costume!

I could, they would PAY me to take it off and put some jeans and a t shirt on.

OK - this whole indigo thing is incredibly odd to me.  I found a test on the internet to determine if you're an indigo.

So, I scored a 42%.  Whatever...

I scored 80% but seriously doubt this has any credibility on anything:P I am just neurotic:))

As someone who believes in astrology to some degree....I want to clarify that "indigo child" does not just refer to autistic children.

"Indigo children are children who are alleged to possess paranormal characteristics like the ability to read minds, according to the New Age Movement.  They are thought to be extremely self-actualized.

Characteristics of an Indigo Child

  1. They come into the world with a feeling of royalty (and often act like it).
  2. They have a feeling of "deserving to be here," and are surprised when others do not share that.
  3. Self-worth is not a big issue; they often tell the parents "who they are."
  4. They have difficulty with absolute authority (authority without explanation or choice).
  5. They simply will not do certain things; for example, waiting in line is difficult for them.
  6. They get frustrated with systems that are ritually oriented and do not require creative thought.
  7. They often see better ways of doing things, both at home and in school, which makes them seem like "system busters" (non-conforming to any system).
  8. They seem antisocial unless they are with their own kind. If there are no others of like consciousness around them, they often turn inward, feeling like no other human understands them. School is often extremely difficult for them socially.
  9. They will not respond to "guilt" discipline ("Wait till your father gets home and finds out what you did").
  10. They are not shy in letting it be known what they need."

It may all be hocus pocus...but indigos are not just autistic children.  It is an astrology/New Age thing.  I am not sure how I feel about indigos (which my mom tells me I am) but I do have some belief in astrology and paranormal.  I think there are some people who are more intuitive and at a higher cognitive and spiritual level than most of society.

Anyway, just wanted to clear up any misconceptions about what an indigo child is.

Ya'll, is this the same Jenny McCarthy, comedienne-type person, who used to be a Playboy model?  And I confess the indigo thing is completely unknown to me. Man, 46 feels really old!

OMG - just read the wikipedia thing on indigo mind reading kids!  Whack-o.

Yup! - She's now dating Jim Carey.  (Gosh,  I feel pathetic that I know these things.)

By what I just read...LMAO....

It seems to me that SOMEONE..(person who invented indigo child) probably got told that their child was Autistic or had simular traits or delays, and was in such great DENIAL....that they came up with this crazy theory.

It's not even recognized in psychology.  LOL

Karrie

Thanks for clearing that up, Anna. I had checked out McCarthy's website
a few months ago...and from what I read, their view was that autistic
children are "indigo children." At least that's what what I walked
away with after reading a lot of what was on that site (& hence have yet to
return). At first, I kind of liked the site because it was a bit more laid-
back-enjoy-your-child type stuff...but then I read a few articles, & it just
got a little strange to me (strange in how they spoke of their autistic
children as being indigos, and the feeling of it being an exclusive club--
about these "indigo-not-autism" kids & not really about autism).

I agree, a special w/ Rosie & Jeny McCarthy on autism, if it's based on
these beliefs...not what the public needs to hear (they have enough crazy
ideas on autism as it is!!!).

Well, that's  it!!!! I am dancing naked in my backyard next full moon.  Maybe my son will start talking or I will get a good night's sleep --- in jail!

Rosie just put this answer on her blog.  I think she's just trying to say that she can relate to people on the spectrum because she herself shares some of the same qualities/characterists.  ??????

angel writes:

Ro, what does it mean when you mentioned being on the spectrum side?

tiny bit autistic

WIMomOf239281.6418518519I saw that too. You must be a Rosie blogger too

P.S. I only know a little about the indigo movement and I am not sure where McCarthy stands on this....I am speaking generally and with minimal knowledge)

When Rosie O'Donnell indicated that she was going to do a show on autism, she mentioned that she was working on it with Jenny McCarthy.  After seeing the indigo children info., I'm not sure how I feel about Rosie partnering with her on this.

Jenny McCarthy is also writing a book about autism.  I assume it's going to be similar to her previous books on pregnancy.  I never read them, but I heard they were funny.

The first time I heard about autism, it was in a psa featuring Doug Flutie and his son.  That was many years ago.  Autism is getting more and more media coverage these days, but I haven't seen Doug Flutie interviewed about it lately.  I would love to hear his perspective.

Thanks for the wikipedia link, it is a very good explanation. I never really knew what indigo's are alleged to be. It seems where the rubber meets the road (science) it comes up quite short

Here's a recent list of 4 athletes who help the autism cause:  Doug Flutie, Athletes against Autism (NHL), Dan Marino, Merton Hanks.

http://autism.about.com/od/inspirationideas/tp/athletes.htm

I had no idea what "indigo" referred to!  I'm not so curious about Jenny McCarthy's website anymore after reading the definition of indigo children from Wikipedia.  Doesn't seem at all my style.
