Tell me about ABA | Autism PDD

Share

Is this something I can take a workshop for and teach myself? I can't afford it privately for my ds but I would like to learn.
I tried searching but wasn't successful. Is there a main website?
Also, are there books that explain it?
I just wanted to add that a book came out in May called "The Verbal Behavior Approach."  It is a step-by-step guide to implementing and structuring a program.  It is available through Different Roads to Learning (www.difflearn.com) and costs .95.  I haven't personally read it, but it looked helpful. There are workshops available for ABA and I do recommend that you take
one. If you can afford a consultant to train you and help start a program
that may be a way to go as well. You will need to find a BCBA in your area.
Have you tried contacting an autism support group in your area for
information on ABA?

I have to agree with Shelly on ABA as it has been the best intervention
that we could have done for our son. We have doing ABA for three years.
WE switched to VB/ABA last year and what a difference.

This is a good resource for books/cards etc.

Good Luck. Our VB/ABA provider does work shops for their therapists, however parents can also attend.  You could try calling a provider in your area and ask if they have training sessions open to parents.  I'm sure there will be a fee, however it will be a nominal amount compared to what actually therapy would cost.

The book " Let me hear your voice" by Catherine Maurice is about her recovering her two kids with autism using ABA..it totally explains it and how it helped her kids..very inspiring and emotional read..she went on to co-author many books..one of which was our bible for ABA for our daughter:

"Behavioral Interventions for young children"  which has all the programs in it with instructions on how to do them...they have ABA workshops but maybe not in your area. The whole ABA technique is teaching skills like talking, self help, receptive and expressive language..labeling, imitating, initiating, sharing, emotions..ect.. step by step rewarding each attempt with either verbal praise or edibles, toys, in hopes the child will repeat it and build on it.  It also totally ignores inappropriate behaviors till they are extinct..

Our daughter had it for 3 years full time and speech and she is a totally different child with language, eye contact near perfect..and academically gifted right now.

Read the first book! IT will motivate you:) Good luck!

Is ABA therapy available through a therapist? Does insurance cover it? I have heard so much about this intervention  but no one has recommended it or told me how to get this. My daughter is 4 and in a special education classroom that is paid for by an IU.
thanks!
Yvonne

We have a home VB/ABA program. And, they trained me to do the programs as well. I think there is a lot you can do. I started with the Maurice Book on my own and then we had a BCBA set up the program. I do have therapists that come to the house since I have another young child at home as well. I do the programs with him several times a week. I would suggest a training and/or reading several of the books that others have mentioned. If you can afford it, try to find someone to adminster an assessment and set up the program.
