thank you everyone i let you know if i come up with exact answer

T loves to pick up a word and run with it for a week or so.  Actually.

when my son learn new words he use them alot . like when he learn to say car, book he will ask for them to play for a week or so.but after little while he doesn't. and then he wont say name of thoes objects either. i don't know is it like they forget name of thoes object, or they will still remember but they are not interested any more.do we have to show them picture of all object even they know, so they wont forget,or it will be ther even tho they wont say it.

thanks for help

My son used to do the same thing. He learned his ABC's a few years back and would say them over and over again, and then just one day he couldn't say them anymore. I wasn't sure if he had forgotten them or what. He has done that same thing with a lot of different words. I would also like to know what causes this.

Hmmm... well, a couple of things come to mind, but since I haven't experienced problems like this, take them for what they're worth.

First, this is typical of very young children when they are first learning words.  Many typical children when they are learning their first words will learn in this manner - they'll learn a word, use it for a few days, then move on to the next word.  Since our kids are developmentally delayed, this could just be a late onset of this idiosynchratic mode of vocabulary acquisition.

Second, autistic kids are sometimes bad at generalizing things.  Some autistic kids, for example, might learn the word 'car' from looking at a picture of a car, but not graspt the concept that other cars - cars that a different from the one that was in the picture - are cars, too!  It's hard to tell from your post, but it did occur to me that this might be a problem with generalization - learning vocabulary words in one context and not able to generalize the terms over multiple contexts, if that makes sense.

These are just guesses, of course.  Your SLP would probably have a more informed opinion, but I wanted to let you know these thoughts that I had.
