Is Kevin maybe worried that someone will see him riding with training wheels? Is he self-conscious and a little embarrassed? Maybe he would feel more comforatable about trying if you went to a more remote area where there wouldn't be a chance of him seeing someone he knows. ????????????? Also, maybe it would help him to know that he's not the only person who learned to ride a bike when they were a bit older. Just this past week, one of the parents here mentioned that they had not learned to ride a bike until they were 10.
Maybe you could also try a little bribe. If he practices, he can earn some sort of a reward. Try motivating him with something he would really like.

Hi everyone
I was reading some of the postings the other day about how old some of your sweet children have been riding bicycles. and you are all so lucky that they were started very young I think.
A lot of you know the story about my grandson Kevin and how he was neglected. Another one of his problems is that at the age of 12 he had never been on a bike in his life but that is due to the fact that Kevin never had to do any kind of exercise in his young life. He was always left alone with himself and never had to use up any energy
Now I have also told you that I am short and fluffy, honestly last summer I decided to go on a diet and I went from 280 lbs to 240lbs and I was doing really good on the diet, then Kevin came to live with us and because he was so antisocial at the time my daily 1 hour walks went from 6 days a week down to almost nothing becuse it was an arguement every time. Then he asked us if he could have a bike with training wheels and here in Canada the trainging wheels for a 24 inch bike were 350$. This year I decided that I would try the internet and I found some in the States for only 99$ so I ordered them and had them sent to my brother's place in Manchester NH and we bought him a nice bike
We were so proud of ourselves because we thought we were going to make him happy and at the same time he would get some exercise. What a huge mistake
Well today he was being his obstinent self again and was not watching what he was doing and accidently tripped me needless to say this petite little flower that I am went down on my knees and though I am sure nothing is broken or torn I am in agony
The thing I want to know from any one here is there any way we can get him not to stress out on the bike so much when we go out do any of you have any tricks?
Tond of hugs to you all
Alice
My son just learned to ride this summer, at age almost 9. The story of his success is described here on our forum:

I'm sure you'll get lots of good answers to your question, but you'll also find some tips under this old topics on our forum:

Good luck with everything, and I hope you're feeling better soon.
Could you find someone with a atationary bike he could "ride" just to get used to pedaling and how a bike seat and handlebars feel? I am certain he wants to ride, but his lack of experience and his uncertainty about bikes is over-riding his desire. (my opinion of course). I really wouldn't push it--that might make it worse. Good luck!!
