If he has a Behavior Intervention Plan in place, does that mean he has had FBA...it seems that most of the things in this BIP don't work...maybe because like you said we haven't evaluated what is causing the behavior we are just trying to deal with it? Not necessarily would he have an FBA if he has a BIP. You really need to do an FBA prior (even a brief one) to correctly develop the behavior plan....orhterwise your behavior plan is literally just a shot in the dark of how to manange the behavior in question.
Thanks Tricia...that's what I was kind of thinking happened here...I see Mason's ST and OT on Tuesday, I am going to ask for sure if he had one or not, but I don't recall hearing that he has, and I looked over his IEP and nowhere in there does it say that he has...it just states what they want to do incase of behavior problems...but with the new IEP it is the same things that were in there last time and that obviously didn't work last year!
Thanks again guys!!
you can go to this site and find out more about FBA's and BIP's: cecp.air.orgFBA stands for Functional Behavioral Assessment. That means we need to find out what the actual FUNCTION of a particular behavior is. For example, a child might run away to escape a situation or he might run away for attention (he might like that you chase him). Depending on the function of the running away behavior, you create a plan to address that behavior. If it's for escape, you handle it differently than if it's for attention. Same behavior, different functions, different behavior intervention plans.I'm wondering what exactly an FBA is and how it helps and who does it?
My son had an IEP meeting in May and we placed some behavior techniques in there to address some problem areas. Is that part of an FBA? Do the teachers and staff at the school do this?
Here are my concerns...Mason struggled A LOT last year in kindergarten...mostly behaviorally...meltdowns and outbursts...lots of problems with hitting, kicking, spitting, etc. I know a lot of it has to do with his frustration...he is behind and it takes him a lot longer to catch on to things than other kids...so we put in place a lot of different things to help him, like preteaching to help the frustration, an aide at certain times to help him stay focused, many sensory breaks throughout the day and much more...problem is most of the stuff isn't helping his behavior...it helps a little but he still struggles with so much...the littlest things set him off...and it's so hard to figure all of it out.
Would an FBA help? Or do I already have that in place and I just don't know it...I'm already panicking about 1st grade...Mason absolutely hates school right now and I want to fix this problem as soon as possible! And if I don't have an FBA and would need one, do I try to get it done before school or do I have to wait until school starts?
We have started him on some new meds and it seems to be helping a lot at home but I can tell, like when we go to the doctor, where things are more structured, he is still showing signs of problems...at home he is doing wonderfully...makes sense huh, that he struggles more with structure?? I mean he likes structure and routine and definitely thrives when we have that in place, but only when it's something or somewhere he is comfortable...he just isn't comfortable at school and thus the routine and structure don't do squat for him...am I making any sense here, lol?
Am I looking into the right thing here...is there something else I should be looking into for him? Should I just go with the IEP we have now and try not to worry? It's just with as much as I tried communicating with the school last year it was weeks and weeks before they finally let on that there were any serious problems last year and I just don't want to go through the same things...and sometimes I feel like that IEP is just a piece of paper so the school can't get into trouble...I don't feel like they follow it very well.
Maybe I am just worrying with everything else that's going on with the seizures and I'm going into panic mode, but I just want to help him so much! Sorry to be bombarding with so many questions, can you tell I am still new to this, lol? Thanks for any help!!
