"The doctor who sparked the MMR controversy is to appear before a disciplinary panel on Monday.
Dr Andrew Wakefield and two other doctors will stand before the General Medical Council (GMC) accused of serious professional misconduct.
The trio, who face being struck off, published a paper in The Lancet medical journal in February 1998 suggesting there could be a link between the triple jab, bowel disease and autism. It led to falling numbers of parents immunising their children and a row over whether the then prime minister, Tony Blair, had vaccinated his son, Leo."
WOW Thanks for posting this! I have been hearing bad things about Wakefield for a long time. It is hard to know what is true or false, but if it is true than that is just a disgrace to exploit these parents and children.
And colonoscopies and lumbar punctures without proper approval! OMGoodness! What is that about? If I were the parents I would be P.O.d too.
Here is a follow up to the article with some new information. Am I reading this properly? Is this paper considered reputable in the UK? Anyone?
Remember, there are 2 sides to every story. My local ASA chapter is very pro the MMR - Autism link - I do not know one way or the other - here is something they send out- these are not my own views but here is the other side of the story
On Monday, July 16, 2007, Dr Andrew Wakefield, the British doctor who, in 1998, claimed the MMR 'jabs' may cause digestive problems leading to autism, will be on trial in England by the GMC (General Medical Council) of the United Kingdom. He could lose his license. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,2121522,00.h tml
Unlike the U.S. Federal Claims vaccine trial in June, no mention is made of him having any supposed financial interest in a competitive vaccine. He & his family have been living in Austin, TX, and have been blackballed, lied about & ostracized by the medical community.
"...his findings have since been replicated by researchers in America, Italy and Venezuela. But itīs as if these scientific papers donīt exist,ī says Dr. Wakefield's wife (also a doctor).. `As if all my husband ever did was to be involved in a study of 12 children, then shoot his mouth off. The endless stream of lies told by powerful people in positions of great public trust is horrifying.' http://www.whale.to/vaccines/wakefield9.html
The latest statistics now put the number of Autism Spectrum Disorder children in the UK at 1 out of every 58 children. Dr. Wakefield is one of few doctors who HELPS parents CURE their children of autism. http://www.mothering.com/articles/growing_child/vaccines/mat thew.html Shouldn't that count? Pray that the inquisition will get 'real' and somebody will ask the obvious question... 'why aren't we using the same passion to find out what causes & then CURE autism instead of persecuting folks who have answers that we don't like?'
