spinal menengitis | Autism PDD

My daughter contracted spinal menengitis at 10 days old. Katrina is now 19, and will be 20 in November of this year. It has been a very hard road for her. She began walking at the age of 7 years old.  She has been through 3 operations for her feet, emergency room visits, falls she has had trying to walk on her own, lots of stitches and staples, and many seizures.  Throughout her life she has been stared at, not only by children, but adults too. I use the word adults loosely, because she still drools. I have made "bibs" using bandana's and washclothes sewn together so not to have to put baby bibs on her. But the stares are still there. I taught her to keep her head held high, smile, and go the other way. She is my world, and I am so proud of her. Katrina has worked hard and still has the WORLD to one day except her. I have been taking care of her alone since her father left in 1994. Yes it has been very hard for me too, but I have had the good Lord to help and guide me.

Thank you so much for giving me this chance to tell you about my "special girl".

Thanks for sharing.  It takes a lot of dedication, sometimes more than we thought we had, to care for our children.  It just shows how capable we are of real love.

Just a thought, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a treatment that is found to be helping people whom it was thought we had no effective treatments for.  It might be an option for Kat.

Your an inspiration to all moms and the power of love for our children:)

Thanks for sharing:)

My cousin had it when he was 2 . It looked bad, he got it from day care. He made it and he is ok. Dr. gave my son shots for it . (Dr. said something about kids getting it easier in daycares?)  I can't remember if my daughter had shots for it? I know my son did.

We all will be stronger and so will our special kids in the future. The shots are given at around 12 now. Kat's mom I am a NOv. 21 adult wahoo! I had absebce epilepsy at childhood. I hear feedback training is helping some.
