Treatment - If money didn’t matter | Autism PDD

Welcome to my boat!!! Here is what I am doing.I had my son tested by the district!!! They said mild pdd-nos (even though 2 spec. docs. ruled out autism). So I bit the bullet and said fine what does he qualify for. Sor far he gets to go their special preschool and thru that he gets 2 hours of OT, 2 hours of ST, and 2 hours of ABA. (These services are spilt by pulling him out of class for 1:1, and also part of a group setting). They will also be testing him to see if he qualifies for home-based services. Along all that I am privately giving 2 hours of speech  per week. My main concern with him is the speech. He has around 30 words. He plays socially with kids, no stims, responds to name, makes eyecontact. I am also waiting to see if he will qualify for home services, if so and depending on the number of hours they give him , I will add a private ABA therapy. As far as biomedical stuff go, my husband is a pharmacist and so far I am giving him DHA Fish oil once a day and it seems to help him. My son has no issues with food and eats everything, so I feel that he is getting the nutrient from food.

my son is very mild as well and here is what we are doing:

pulling him from public school system, not going to get anything out of
them for what we need.

leaning on parents for financial support

private ABA and speech (ABA has helped so much that we don't need OT
anymore!)

15 hours in clinic ABA, 1 hour speech, 10 hours certified ABA therapist in
the home, the rest of the hours (getting to 40) is made up of either
interns or students who are trained and supervised by the private
company we use. meet 1 x a month as an entire team to discuss plans,
programs, problems, etc...

Well, let's say money mattered a little bit.  I have concluded that my most valuable commodity is TIME.  Deciding what is best for my son seems to be the hardest thing for me to figure out.  My son is on the mild side of the spectrum with use of language and lack of interest in playing with peers being his main weaknesses.  So, am wondering what others would think is the ideal treatment plan.  I am also wondering about biomedical testing/intervention.  I feel biomed is the stone left unturned – but just don’t know where to start with flushing out the best (if any) biomed interventions.

Thanks.

Out of pocket:

We did 30 hours of ABA/week and 2 hours of speech therapy a week for 3 years... along with 11 hours of preschool class with 2 teachers/8 nt kids and our therapist to shadow her~for 2 years..not sure we could of fitted in anymore..I would of liked some OT and probably some RDI mixed with the ABA...but I think we did the best for her at the time~no regrets:)

I am glad I didnt put her in school till she was 6...she was graduated out of ABA therapy and speech by then so when the school gave her nil it wasnt a big let down..

EDITED: We also did GFCF diet, nystatin for yeast..fish oil, DMG, gluthione cream(?) all for one year..and enzymes too...

ShelleyR39277.6619097222I just turned over "that" stone...the biomed one...and I wish I had done it a lot sooner.  Had our 1st consult with a DAN dr and had the extensive lab workup done on him a month ago.  I found the test results very enlightening!  Because my son has aggression and stimming issues, I want to give the biomed avenue a chance before I possibly have to turn back to psychiatric intervention.    My ds is pretty high functioning and we live in a big city and I can't
believe how hard it is figuring my way around services.
One site that I found helpful recently is autism.com from the autism
research institute that has been around for 40 years . They have collected
data from parents around the world about what kind of interventions
have been successful. Under their assessment section they list all kinds of
drugs, supplements and diets that people have tried and rated for
helpfulness. You can download an assessmennt form (E2) sent it in and
receive a free eval in return. It seems like a good way to collect data and
help people in the process. While not a new resource at all, it was new to
me.
