NY residential facilities | Autism PDD

Hello all. I am new to this group, and am the brother and legal guardian of an autistic adult. Michael is 35, and resides at Bernard Fineson in Queens Village. To make a long story short, I dont like the way my brother is treated over there. So, I was hoping to hear of some good or better programs in NY. My brother seems happy enough over there, but I feel that there is better for him.

Did you parents leave you the information about his OMRDD services or who is his service coordinator, etc.? There are many group homes out here on Long Island.  However, if your brother is living with people he's known for a long time in the community he knew growing up and is happy there, that counts for a lot.  There is no Nirvana.  If you want to get in touch with an organization that might have some contacts in Queens, email Pat at pats@AHAny.org and tell her you found out from Joan.  This group is supposedly for high functioning autistic individuals, but there is a lot of info for people at any point on the spectrum.  Below is information about two of their support groups.  If you post more about your brother's functioning level, his work, his interests, etc., perhaps we can be of more help. He should be able to access adult services thru OMRDD (search that on the web).

If you don't have a good feeling about it, trust your gut.  Is there a state case worker you can discuss options with?  Is it possible for him to live with you instead and get in-home support/therapy?  It sounds like you really care about him.  I've never looked into programs for adults, but if I hear of anything, I'll post :)Thanks Matty, I do care about my brother alot. Now that our parents are gone, I am all he has. I'm not sure who to turn to as far as options go, but I hope to find out.
