Is Soymilk OK? | Autism PDD

Share

Ok so I am going to try a dairy free diet for 2 weeks or so...

I can't get rice/potato milk at the nearby grocery store.. Can I use Silk Soy milk instead? Also, I should be avoiding ALL dairy including yogurt/cheese or is fermented probiotic yogury OK?

Thanks!!

PS: Today marks 3 weeks (complete 3 weeks) and she is still howling at the sight of the therapist.. I am at the computer upstairs and all I hear is screaming.. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!

I just want to wake up to a child who looks at me and smiles.. it will give me the strength to try ....

How do they test for soy sensitivity?? I can't get her urine etst done...so I don't evenknow what her glutein/peptide counts are...!

SOY DREAM ice cream is marvelous too!

Hope you are doign okay - it can be so rough, my heart goes out to youSoymilk is fine. Did your daughter test sensitive to soy at all? My son did.
You should try casein (milk protein) free. So yes this includes all and any
dairy related products. TACA Now a qick starter on how to start the diet.
Good Luck.

Good for you for hanging in there.Rita, you can get a blood test done as well. I think you have your hands full.
It does not harm though to cut out soy and casein. You can get orange juice
with calcium added to it. You can make fruit smoothies (will she drink
them?) How is she with popsicles?
I freeze a lot of my own treats?

rita, hang in there.  That has got to be tough.  She sounds so much like the girls at that age (specifically, Abigail, who never really learned to cry - just to scream in an almost inhuman way) - the difference being, we did not have the girls in therapy so we were never faced with this escape/avoidance tantrum behavior.  Don't give up hope.  The therapist is trying to gain instructional control and your daughter is not giving in easily.  Once the teaching begins, I'm sure establishing some functional communication is going to be among the top priorities.  This will be worth it if she can start helping your daughter communicate in better ways.  You have to just grit your teath and get through this.  The alternative - giving up - will make things harder, longer, probably.

Is your therapist being backed by a good behaviorist?  What's her take on how difficult this is going?

Anyway, I feel for you.  I can empathize with you.  It is really, really hard, I know, but you're making an investment that will pay off in spades if things go right.

Anyway, to your question - Soy Milk should be fine.  Are you seeing symptoms of some sort of milk sensitivity or allergy?  The thing about soy milk is, well, it doesn't taste very nice (I'm sure some will disagree), and with what's going on right now, I'm not sure I would be making yet more changes, especially changes that she's not likely to be agreeable to.  OTOH - if she's clearly having GI issues and you suspect milk is the suspect, go for it - but I'd be careful not to do wholesail dietery changes or more blood draws, doctor's visits, etc, unless you think there's clearly a link - in the midst of everything else.

Let us know if there's anything else we can reasonably do to help you through this.  Do you have a support system around you - friends, relatives, etc?

fred39275.3355787037Rita,

Does your daughter like music?  I know that my son loves it, and is soothed by it.
Maybe she could have a background CD playing while she is with her therapist.  She could even use it as a reinforcer.  Just a thought
