Melatonin- do you use it? How much... | Autism PDD

We us Natrol brand to. It worked for a while and then just stopped for some reason. Now it just helps get him to sleep and he's back waking up all hours of the night. My son takes 3 mg. Any less it won't work any more it make him irritable.  3mg gets him to sleep in about 20-30 min no side effects but does not always keep him sleeping.  Before melatonin he could be up until 1 am.  I tried many other things that just did not work or only worked for a little while.  Melatonin has been working for 3 years.  He is 6 years old.

No, but I'm thinking about it after two sleepless nights!  Have been working on a big project on the computer and getting ready for a 20 person dinner party, so the TV has been babysitting LOTS more than usual these past two days.

Cole will sleep about 4 hours, wake up vaguely asking Mom? and pass out when I say I"m here.  But sometimes - if he's fighting a virus or is too stimulated, he'll get up at 4 and never go back down.  Like last night and the one before.

By the way, Herschel Walker, Heismann Trophy winner and NFL star has only slept 3-4 hours per night his entire adult life, and in high school and into his 30s, he only ate 2 hamburgers and a salad per day.  His thighs are enormous, he is one of the fastest humans out there, and also does ballet for his dexterity. He is the perfect human with seemingly no fuel behind him.

I hate to say this, but neurologically, there are some people who just don't need it like I do!  Gotta ru..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Melatonin GETS my child to sleep but does NOT keep him asleep. He takes 5 mg 60 pounds. I would think 3 would be safe. I have never heard of nausea as a side effect - are you usign NATROL brand? It is the best according to autism specialist here in the rockies..GOOD LUCK!

I used it for awhile with Mason, but he is 6 and weighs 55lbs...he was taking 1.5mg...it seemed to work well at first...no side effects...only problems we saw were: one that it didn't seem to help him sleep through the night, would only get him to sleep pretty quickly and for about 3-4 hours...and second it seemed to lose its affect after about 6 weeks of use...so we stopped it for a few days and that seemed to help...we ended up having to not use it anymore after about 2 months anyway...we were using it to counteract the side effects from a seizure med Mason was using, but had to ditch that too.

Good luck, hope it helps this time around!!

Should I give my 30 month old who is 38 pounds and 40 inches tall? I have tried it in the past but only used 1 mg (I think).

Anyway, he seemed to always vomit after I gave it to him, so I have been leary to try it again. I haven't tried it in about 6 months, so I am thinking about trying it again. Any side effects noticed by your children? Any increase in night terrors?

Any feedback would be great- I am taking him to pediatrician and an ENT to rule out enlarged tonsills, etc, and sleep apnea, but any relief in the meantime would be great!

I tried my son on Natrol.  It was bad bad bad.  We went back to the GNC and will never try anything else.
