Hey Kelly3232 Welcome to the boards here as well! Must be the day for new members! Glad to see you all here and I hope you all find the boards to be as supportive as the rest of us have!  My HF daughter takes Depakote for her agressive behavior. It has worked very well. She takes 500mg daily at bedtime.New to this group.

I have 9 year old HF autistic son.

He has been showing some agressive, defiant , behavior for about 1/2 a year, which was not too bad , he was able to redirect easily within the past 2 months it has been getting worse when demands are placed on him (this mostly at home and only in summer school). We are trying to prepare him for the 4th grade since the demands as so we don't want to feel anixious when he gets to this grade.

We are looking at some meds alone with behavior therapy.

We have started the therapy, which seems to work but we are looking at some meds to help him calm down

The doctor suggested

Tenex - for the aggressive behavior and the hyperactive behaviors.

or

Risperdal - for the aggressive behavior and ADHD

Has anyone had there used these med for there autistic child and if so how was the results.

Hi
I am new here also.

I have a 10 year old son(PDD, NOS, ADHD, LD, Aniety, impluse problems).  He to is very aggressive mainly at home.

He is on Risperdal (.50 mg 3x a day) for the aggression and ADHD...he has been on it now 2 plus years.  We have found that it works nicely.  Have not had side effects of weight gain at this point.

He also works with a theripist.

Others here my be able to help better.  I too am looking for help with aggressive behavior and anger management issues.

Thank you.

Hi Vimala Welcome to the boards! My son will be 10 in 2 months and has been on risperdal since he was 4. For us it has been wonderful but not all meds work the same for each child. Risperdal is supposed to help with anxiety as well but for my son we had to add another med to help with that.

I have not had any personal experience with Tenex but someone else her may have.....

I know with risperdal it can increase their appetite (too bad it didnt increase the variety of food

Unfortunatley meds seem to be trial and error with our kids.

Have you tried to keep things consistent and on schedule for him to reduce anxirty or frustration? Is he verbal? Is he able to communicate his feelings, wants, needs? Have you tried some stress reducing therapy scheduled into his daily schedule?

Here are a few ideas that might be helpful......

Hi Bridget Welcome to the board as well! You snuck in there on me while I was posting the links LOL Thank you for the wealth of information on med therapy.

Currently we have started Ben (my son) in therapy, to sort out some of his feelings of anxiety and to help him with some self-soothing techniques.

We try to keep Ben's routine as stable as possible.

Ben is verbal and has a very high receptive language. he is also quite social (basically with adults and teenagers he has some close friends of age).

We are hoping if he start the meds tha thearpy will be more effective as he learns the new techniques w/ being anxious or agressive.

Thank you all for the welcome.

I live in a very isolated part of upstate NY and have to travel hours to get to good doctors.  I have found a few and it makes it worth travel.

I also work for the state of NY in the field of developmental diablities.  So I'm hoping that I might be able to help others out there.

Hi All,

another question? It seems that alot of your kids seemed to be on tenex, risperdal, etc for a long period time, My question is how you tried to reduce the doses or removing the drug on a trial basis?

And what was your child reaction, did the child go back to the agressive behavior?

We will be working with a psychologist(therapy) and psycharists to adjust the dosages.

Our concern is that we don't want this drug or any drug therapy to be a lifelong.

Just wondering?
Vimala

Vimala, My son has been on risperdal for several years...... We did try to ween him off and yes the aggressive behaviors came back... he also had more meltdowns, and started losing his ability to communicate (stuttering - longer time between words - inability to find his words) We tried abilify which was horrible for him (anger outbursts ever 3 minutes for hours at a time) We have worked with behavior therapy and it has taught us how to handle a meltdown and decreased them some but the self injurious behaviors, anger and aggression are still there.

Recently we started Luvox in addition to risperdal and I have to say I am impressed... he is starting to go outside and want to swing for hours at a time where as before he HATED to be outside even with his handheld video games! The anxiety has decreaased and the self injurious behaviors are nothing like they had been. Its still early for me to say its the med, or just a phase hes in.... but Im excited, Im hoping maybe if the Luvox is helping that much Maybe the risperdal can be stopped eventually
