wieghted blanket and a fan and i can sleep through the night as megan does now.. She is still in constant motion and she gave up naps totally at 18 months.. hang in there and try some of the suggestions. My best wishes to you all..First of all welcome!

There may be many issues involved, but you may want to talk to your OT about a weighted blanket. This may help him settle down. Or try classical music or white noise machine. We also have to remember that this a very common problem with 2 year old NT kids and the usual suggestions may help.  Do you already have  a usual 30 minute wind-down routine before bedtime? This may include bath, quiet play, reading stories, snuggling and then bedtime. I would also try to move his nap back to his usual time.  After lunch is a natural time for the toddlers to sleep. Also since he's napping later- he may not be tired at his normal bedtime- so if you can't change the naptime, maybe push bedtime back 30 minutes to an hour.

I also find DS goes through phases- for a few weeks he wasn't napping well and seems to back on schedule. Good Luck.

p.s. What does he get in the bottle? water?
Hi Danielle,

You could be describing MY son, except he doesn't take naps ever anymore!!  I have NO suggestions, since we're dealing with the same issues. :)  Luke is, luckily, pretty good about going to bed at night, however.  We have our routine set and he knows that once those teeth get brushed, PJs, a few books, and bed are soon to follow.

Good luck!

I am the mother of a very active 2 year old son recently diagnosed with pdd/autism. He seems to never stop moving. He is on a GF/CF diet. At bedtime, which used to be so simple, a bottle, being rocked in the rocking chair and then being able to place him in his toddler bed and he would go to sleep, has changed dramatically. He now is never asleep before 11pm and is constantly moving in his bed, he is exausting to watch. His nap has moved to a later time 2-4pm because of therapy. Once he is asleep he usually stays asleep maybe waking once. and then sleeps till 7am. Any ifo would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Danielle Welcome to the board. What Type of therapy is he receiving? ou may be able to have a sensory profile done to see if it may be some of the cause to his constant moving.  Can therapy be changed to the 2 - 4 slot so nap wont be disrrupted? It may take a few weeks before you might be able to slide into that time slot but if possible I would suggest trying it.

My son will be 10 shortly....  hes always had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. We have to give him a small dose of clonidine to get him to fall sleep, but it doesnt keep him asleep. We now have a weighted blanket that has been a huge help it calms and relaxes him and makes him feel secure. (Think how the lead xray aprons feel on you)  I have also heard of using bed tents although we never did get one for my son.

There is a thread here recently started on sleep issues helping my toddler sleep thru the night and several others from the past if you search them that might be helpful.....

If you're interested in trying a weighted blanket there are links in the first post on the For Newbies to our Forums  thread probably about 3/4 of the way through the post. I also have a pattern to make a weighted blanket I can email if you or someone you know can sew.

Hang in there

Danielle,

Hi..I just wanted to say welcome to the board!!!  I have a 3 year old son with autism.  This board has been so helpful for me as I'm sure it will be for you.  Take care,

karrie

i have been reading things on this site and just recently felt comfortable asking questions. I am so glad i did. I really needed this. I miss being able to talk to my girlfriends about things like our children deal with. I still treasure all of them and they are very supportive, but they really don't get it when i say things like "i wish he would just notice his sister",she's almost 6 and Logan is 2yrs 2mths old.

Although he has no problem pulling her hair. And to think i couldn't wait for them to interract. LOL

Oh and just tonight he said DA DA for the first time very clearly. Now why is it that is always said before MA Ma is, in any child. LOL

By the way i keep seeing initials like ds and nt?

Danielle, mother of Logan

Danielle,

Hi and welcome to the board again!

I think sleep is a million dollar question followed by potty training. I have a four yr old HFA (high funtioning autistic) son who has problems with both. I wish I had the answers.

DS= dear son

NT= nero typical or so called normal

Congrations on Da Da! It's so wonderful to get those first words. My superstitious Grandma used to say if they say Da Da first the sex of the next child would be a boy and Ma Ma meant a girl.

I found it to be pretty much true but I have 4 boys. Jared my second son said Ma Ma but he never follows the rules.

Nelle

Its awesome he said DADA for the first time! Congratulations  Heres to it being the beginning of many more new words to come!
