My therapist the other day informed me that my insurance will now cover up to 9 hrs for a psych or neuro. psych. evaluation for people with behavioral health issues, including ASD.
I know that I would like to do this, but when we were discussing it, she said that he might not be old enough to have one done. Do any of you know when an ASD child would be ready to have one? Or does it matter how verbal he is?
I don't think any of you are in CT to see if you know of a good child psychologist/neuro.psych. that would be able to do this. It still requires prior knowledge, but at least they will cover it now.
Also, how long does a typical psych evaluation take? Would we NEED more than 9 hrs to get an accurate view? So much to think about...
I think a neuro psych exam can usually last 4-5 hours if there is an educational component to it. The term is really broad, so you ought to get more specifics from whomever is recommending it.
Good luck!
we have a neuro psych on our "medical team". she meets with us 1 x a
month to see how he is doing and will continue to monitor his progess
and admin tests when need be. Our eval took 4 sessions--so 4 hours, but dd also has 2 + yrs w/ a
neuro, EEG's, OT, PT, ST evals, geneticist for 2 yrs, and the school
eval...so doc had a lot to look through. The other "autism expert" in the
area's eval is roughly 10-12 hours long, this includes those therapy evals
(OT & ST), 3 hours of speaking to parents & filling out questionaires, time
playing/interacting with child, consults w/ other professionals as needed.
So, I imagine 9 hours would be enough.
Unless you are not getting appropriate services, I may wait on the eval,
since you already have the diagnosis. For us, there is a big center a few
hours away, that may be able to give us more information &
recommendations for dd. We are going to wait until she is around
school-age (just before kindergarten) for this type of eval. That's what
we've decided, that at that point, we would need that type of info moreso
than now.My daughter had a neurophsych eval at 4-years-old. The Dr. gave her an IQ test, the preschool version of the WISC. He also gave me some questionaires to determine the whether she was on the spectrum. At that time, he gave the DX of mixed receptive-expressive language disorder. Now that she is nearly 7-years-old, she has way more symptoms, and I feel she is definitely on the spectrum. At the time that we got the eval, she had just started preschool so we did not know her extreme social problems. I also recall the Dr. asking if she had an unusually good memory. Well, because of her lack of verbal skills I did not know she did, so I said no. Well, know she asks me about things that happend when she was two or so, so yeah, she does have a good memory. I guess, what I am saying is the quality of the eval may depend on your son's verbal skills. The eval was about 2 hours.
