We are going to start the GFCF diet soon. I've been trying some mixes and checking out our local health food stores. For those of you who have done this, what is a good replacement for butter? I notice most of the GF mixes call for butter, and for a mix, I don't want to screw up the food by trying a substitute that may not work!
Also my son is addicted to chocolate milk (carnation) and chocolate Pediasure. Any good GFCF chocolate drink mixes or chocolate milk subsitutes that you and your kids like?
Thanks!
Nestles makes a gfcf chocolate syrup (not the dry mix - it contains dairy).
Fleishmans unsalted butter is gfcf - made from corn, however the salted butter is not cf. Spectrum makes either a corn or olive oil based butter. You can also use spectrum non-hydrogenated vegetable (palm) shortening from the health food store if you want to use it to bake cookies.
Earth Balance makes shortning/buttery sticks/buttery spreads that you canLittle Bird & KathyK,
Where do you get your Spectrum & Earth Balance "butter"? Are those from a health food store?
I get mine from Wild Oats/Whole foods/Mothers markets. I think that TraderYou can transform Canola in to a butter substitute. There are many companies including Earth Balance that make canola based butter spreads, and you can use canola spray to season and coat things.
Thanks for the websites. I've only been able to find Fleishmans margarine locally and I am not crazy about it because it has trans fat in it. Was really hoping to keep my costs down by buying locally, but that doesn't look promising. Thanks for all your input.
By the way, I found a chocolate flavored almond milk that my son likes!

Spectrum products are generally at health food stores, but I have seen them in some of the grocery stores that carry more natrual foods products.
Fleishman's unsalted butter are sold at most grocery stores, except Walmart which only carries the salted butter that is not cf.
Someone had mentioned chocolate chips: Enjoy Life and Tropical Source makes gfcf chocolate chips.
Here are some websites where you can purchase gfcf food products:

Earth balance is the ABSOLUTE best 'butter' there is - we use it exclusively. For chocolate, my husband and I use SILK chocolate soy milk, and for 'regular' chocolate chips without milk, ghiardelli is the only company I know that does milk free ch chips - we do NO chocolate for our son, though, of any kind, not even dairy free or anything, because of the caffeine. We use Ghee http://www.purityfarms.com/ as a butter alternative...it is organic, kosher and casein free...I buy it Whole Foods..it takes just like butter and best yet it is natural without any artificial!!![QUOTE=mom of twins]Thanks for the websites. Great. Just make sure you don't have him drink too much. I know of a boy who developed an intolerance to almond milk because that was all he drank. You can try diluting it w/ other milks, such as rice or soy. Just a suggestion. I love almond milk too:)
