Camping--good for the soul ! | Autism PDD

I've been wanting to do this for vacation this year.  My dh jokes that roughing it is a hotel without a concierge soooo I think we'll at least get a cabin.  I'd like to do a vacation without theme parks etc.  It sounds fun and relaxing.  Glad you had a great time!We just took the kids camping over the fourth of July and what a difference in the interaction with my son when no TV's, no Computers, no Playstations, no Radios.  Mind you it wasn't primitive camping, we had ac and refrigerator, but we had absolutely no techno devices which my son uses for stimming.  We had a nice lake, a sixty foot water slide, a fishing pond, and a jumping castle and a playground.  He loved it!  We loved it!  Now he was ready to come home after 2 days.  The last night was really hard for him.  All he could think about was home.  So I don't know if we could have gone for much longer without outbursts.  But, it was a great way to get a way and just enjoy each other.  He absolutely loved the big waterslide.  I am telling you the little guy has no fear.  I think we are going to start doing this atleast once or twice a year just for the health of the family.  He interacted with us so much more than he does at home.  He had no escape there.  And being that we didn't push it for too long it kept him from having those unwanted meltdowns.  Just thought I would share this experience with you guys.Thats awsome, ive always enjoyed camping, and do so during the summer and fall on a regular basis. Usually i bring a small group of ppl, i dont like more then 3-4 ppl tho, so u get an opperunity to listin to nature and not a bunch of ppl talking loudly. Usually when I came i spend 0$ aside from gas and food, we rough it for the weekend, get away from everything, and have nothing but a fire and tents, its great and when I come back after the weekend, usually wanting a shower ASAP, i feel refreshed, as nature recharges me and im ready for another week of work.

Im gald u guys had fun, it must have been hard for him to break his routine but im glad he enjoyed.

I couldn't agree with you more rubyruby.  My DH's family went camping a lot when he was a kid.  It is one of his fondest childhood memories and he wanted to share the experience with his own children.  We were tent campers up until last year when we finally bought a pop-up tent camper.  It's so nice being able to leave everything packed and ready to go. (We do still have the tents.)  We actually went 10 times last year and so far we have gone 3 times this year.  WI is an excellent state for camping.

I swear camping brings out the best in my kids.  All of the physical activity and enjoying nature does them a lot of good.  There's also a lot of other kids at the state parks we go to, so they have a lot of social opportunities as well.

I'm so glad to hear you had such a positive camping experience and that your son did so awesome with it.  Is he asking when you're going to go again?
