My son stimming | Autism PDD

Her is a link to my son singing a song and stimming with the hand flapping very similiar to your son.  He will flap this way and cross his eyes most of the time and stop and run just like your son is doing.  That is amazing to see in another child.

He reminds me a lot of my daughter.....she does the same thing.....back and forth, back and forth.

She has hand movements, but I never considered them to be the same as the hand flapping I had read about.....but I guess they are pretty similar.....the differnce is my daughter taps her fingers on EVERYTHING....people, furntiure, the ground, the car, food......it just started about a month ago and it is getting worse !

I'll have to figure out how to tape with my camera and get your thoughts and opions !

He is adorable!

My son does the back and forth thing too....with his own sound effects.

Your son is a cutie.  My dd stimms too.  She does a finger rubbing movement that goes along with a facial grimace.  I used to really hate it.  My heart sank every time she did it.  I am much better with it now...after 4 years I guess I have to be:)

I actually saw your video and didnt think it looked bad at all.  It made me think that I make too big a deal out of my dd's stim.  Your son looks happy and I guess my dd does too.

I just worry about school and other kids wondering what she is doing.  I worry about teasing.

My daughter does hers as a reaction, it appears to be something she "cant" control???  I think of it as a reflex to excitement.

Thank you for posting the video, he is really adorable.

Looks familiar.  Except my son adds squawking/screeching along with it.  Your son's adorable.Yeah he is a cutie pie!
WOW I love how you both have explained it. He told me he has to do this to help him "think". I asked him if I did it too, would it help me think? He said "Sure". LOL But I agree, since he is starting first grade I do not think he is going to get away with doing that at school anymore, but I don't see why he can't do it at home or in the yard.
Here is a video showing my son's hand flapping/pacing/arm-hugging stim. He does these for periods of time throughout the day. This particular episode occurred this evening while we were doing snap-pop fireworks and I thought to catch it on film. I felt like sharing so that you guys could see it, I know you will understand. I wish he would have been more engaged in the evening, but all in all I think he had a good time.

Your son is soooo cute !
hmmm, i dont recall ever moving my hands like that, but running back and forth for some reason was enjoyable, i think certain chemicals were released making this a pleasurable experience, often due to excitment or anxiousness. Too this day, i dont run back and forth but I do pace very quickly back and forth when excited or anxious, it helps me focus and makes me feel better.

He must have not known he was being taped, otherwise i doubt he would have acted the way he did, although he is way younger then I was when I started remembering frequently things.

I wonder if he beleives thats acceptable in peoples eyes, i mean, i dont know if u wanna allow him to do that or not, its a good feeling, but definatly when he gets older, if he does not get it on his own u may have to explain to him not to do that, unless in private, i learned on my own, although the last time i did this was age 14 to my knowledge and i was with a few ppl, they were in the pool and i was on the deck running back and forth, and thats pretty old for someone with my degree of function and social understanding to be doing this i think.

Im sure hell do that for many more years to come, but i also think its a healthy outlet for how he feels, assuming he did it for similar reasons that I did. That's what I do, except I stay still for it most of the time. I've found that if I have to suppress it I feel awful afterwards. bullet39268.0989467593 AWWW what a little sweetie! WOW they really are similar! Gage acts the same way when we are inside the house - he does a LOT of vocal stimming and repetitive phrases, sqauks, makes noises all the time. Sometimes he makes a certain face and screams or says this weird sound which I hate LOL (It sound's like "uh Uh uh" like a porno or something  It just grosses me out so he doesn't get to do that sound very often when I am around!)
Anyway TY for sharing your little guy
What a sweetie!  I still pace back and forth very quickly for hours until I fall asleep when someone is sick...don't know what the comfort is in that, but it's all I can do when extremely afraid/anxious.  One thing I really notice is familiar is the way they rub their head or a part of their face in between.  You know I kow that it is something that eventually we should stop or redirect because it is so noticeable and not socially acceptable, but I have always thought his hand flapping was adorable.  Especially when he gets excited.  It's like you can just feel how excited he is because he is expressing it with his handflapping.  But, people don't understand this.  Children especially.  when we went camping this weekend we went down a water slide and while we were at the top waiting for it to be our turn, all he could do was flap and cross eyes and shriek!  The other kids didn't know what to think.  But, they could not take his eyes off of him.  Your son is adorable.  Maybe he was a little scared of the noise and started stimming to get away from it.  My son does this.  He usually will put his hands over his ears.  Like watching fireworks.  He loves to watch fireworks but the noise is too much for him to handle.  so he will start this stimming.  Anyway thanks for sharing!looks like my son.  My son does the hand flap thing as well, except that he stares at his hands while he does it (visual stim too?).  When he's pacing, it's a recipe for disaster as he is always bumping into corners or tripping over things!

My guy looks exactly the same way. Including the touching of another part of the face, or pulling the shirt down or scratching his bum in between running and pacing and flapping. Just the same. Made me smile a little. I know misery likes company. Not that we're miserable, but you know. And if you would make a similar request in between his running like "close the door" he'd comply as well. So similar!

savannah flapps her hands...but only at the wrists...usally accompanied by her jumping up and down...she also bends her fingers into weird positionsLOL he can't really run because of his motor problems but he does look like he is galloping LOL Well, I always wanted a horse! ;)

oops, posted in the wrong place. Ignore.

Linda1156739280.2735763889Seems he has control over it though, which is good, the one thing I noticed and I wonder how many other parents picked up on this as well was the way he runs, he gallops! My son does this too, he looks like a horse when he runs its funny.
