HPV Vaccine for 6th Graders | Autism PDD

Share

I did an Internship in an OB office while in the Military.  ABout 85% of out patients tested positive for HPV.  WOW!!!

But - I will not let the governemnt tell me when to vaccinate my child aginst this.  Are there any religious organizations that are taking the positiong that the chldren can be exempt due to religious reasons?

The vaccine has not been out long enough to see if there are any negative side effects to it.  Luckily, my daughter is 5 so we have some time to see what happens and think about it.

From what I understand (my gyno, and read) when you get a pap HPV is really what they are looking for, therefore by vaccinating before sexually active, then they are hopefully catching the problem before there is one.  I am just glad my DD won't be 12 for a while so that they can work out the kinks.  Otherwise, I will have her first in line.

PS> I am a cervical cancer survivor due to HPV. I had 1 experience with a long term relationship before I met my husband, I got cervical cancer 5 years later and my DH tested negative.  So, it was dormant in my system for at least 5 years!

I found out after the birth of my 4th baby I was + for HPV. I had an abnormal pap and it came back pre-cancerous. The Dr did a procedure to biopsy and take out a portion of cervix. Really--it wasn't anything horrible.

This really is an "invisible" disease. Dh got it from "someone" earlier in life! (no signs of it until about 10 years in marriage). This disease can be "dormant" for 20 years! I had all normal paps until that first pap after my 4th baby. No other signs.

My 12yo will not be getting the vax--right now. Neither will my 11y going into 6th grade. When they are older I will talk to them about this and they can decide if they want it or not. I will tell them my history with this and how you get this disease.

By the way--I've never had another abnormal pap in over 5 years.

As if we don't have enough to worry about, but my state (Indiana) just mandated all female sixth grade parents are given information about receiving the HPV Vaccine and they are suggesting it be tracked - who receives it, who doesn't.  If you actually read the adverse reactions from the clinical trials it will make you think twice.  All my life I"ve had skewed pap smears and pre-cancer cells treated and I was happy to hear of the new vaccine for my daughter.  But I will not be getting it any time soon for her.  Actually read some of the reports.

Judicial Watch Uncovers Three Deaths Relating to HPV Vaccine

Event Reports Obtained from FDA Detail 1,637 Adverse Reactions to Gardasil

(Washington, DC) -- Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released documents obtained from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, detailing 1,637 reports of adverse reactions to the vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV), Gardasil.  Three deaths were related to the vaccine.  One physician’s assistant reported that a female patient “died of a blood clot three hours after getting the Gardasil vaccine.”  Two other reports, on girls 12 and 19, reported deaths relating to heart problems and/or blood clotting.

As of May 11, 2007, the 1,637 adverse vaccination reactions reported to the FDA via the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) included 371 serious reactions.  Of the 42 women who received the vaccine while pregnant, 18 experienced side effects ranging from spontaneous abortion to fetal abnormities.

Side effects published by Merck & Co. warn the public about potential pain, fever, nausea, dizziness and itching after receiving the vaccine.  Indeed, 77% of the adverse reactions reported are typical side effects to vaccinations.  But other more serious side effects reported include paralysis, Bells Palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and seizures.

“The FDA adverse event reports on the HPV vaccine read like a catalog of horrors,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.  “Any state or local government now beset by Merck’s lobbying campaigns to mandate this HPV vaccine for young girls ought to take a look at these adverse health reports.  It looks as if an unproven vaccine with dangerous side effects is being pushed as a miracle drug.”

Judicial Watch filed its request on May 9, 2007, and received the adverse event reports from the FDA on May 15, 2007.  Judicial Watch has posted the adverse event reports below.

(A recent study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also questioned the general effectiveness of Gardasil.)

Click on the Judicial Watch url.  It will give you a report with a "click here" to view the two reports.I live in Indiana.  My 10 grade daughter has had the shot.  Tihs voluntary right? For Indiana, as of now, yes.I am curious, where in Indiana are you located.  You could PM me if you like.

I would add, however, Judicial Watch is harldy an unbiased party.  They have a distinct agenda ...

Northwest Indiana (Dyer) - one hour SE of Chicago! The skeptic in me wonders why the push for this.  I know they were talking about making it mandatory in TX.  Why?  You're not going to catch HPV just by sitting by someone in school.  If this is a voluntary thing - o.k.  If they try to make it mandatory, I suspect a pharmaceutical company and some policticians are in bed together for the sake of money and power, not public health. That is how I feel.  HPV is a sexually transmitted disease and I am not comfortable with the government telling me I have to give this to my 12 year old daughter.  I don't know anything about Judicial Watch's agenda.  But you can't ignore the FDA's own clinical trial reports attached thereto.  I want the option of waiting on yet another vaccine.

Epidemiology and public health policy are not designed to protect the individual, but the society, from disease.  In order to be effective, a large segment of the population must be protected.

Somebody with more knowledge can chime in and correct me if I am wrong...but it is sexually transmitted.

Funny this thread should come up today as my daughter (will be 17 in August) went for her yearly checkup with the pediatrician today and she got the first in the series of 3 shots to complete the HPV immunization. She is not sexually active and the doctor said that is the best time to get the series. If she was sexually active then her blood would have to be tested to see if she had already been exposed to the papilloma virus in which case there would be no reason to have the shot because if would be too late. It prevents genital warts too which carry the HPV virus. My sister works as a cytologist and she sees young girls and woman all the time who have the virus. It is very sad. My daughter had no ill effects other than a little discomfort at the injection site but she didn't even require any Tylenol.

Get the facts and then make your decision with your daughter. I DON'T agree with the states making it mandatory!! Oh, our pediatrician said boys could get the series too in the future but because of shortages it is only being released for girls.

As far as protecting society, it seems to me that this should not be mandated especially at such an early age. I understand that girls are having sex earlier and earlier (boys too!), but let's not add ONE MORE vaccine to an already overloaded body of them!

I guess I don't understand how it is spread - it is sexually transmitted? With the side effects of the vaccine, you can bet I will NOT be getting one from my daughter unless lots of changes happen by the time she is in 6th grade! I hope Minnesota doesn't pass such a law!

I know in WA state-they "say" it's mandatory. Nothing is mandatory!! On our school vax records, you can sign the back to decline certain vax's based on personal or religious reasons. But...you are also signing that if an "outbreak" (measles, mumps, chicken pox, Hep-A, etc) happens---your child legally has to stay home. FINE WITH ME!! I'm sure that an outbreak of HPV isn't going to be happening!!

I know for our state they now want the kids to get the Hep-A also. I declined for all my kids.

HopeMommy, thanks for pointing it out. Webmd seems to explain why it's called a sexually transmitted disease if only 30 out of 100 strains can indeed be sexually transmitted (They are considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD) because they are caused by a virus that can be spread by sexual contact).

Also the link I provided only provides information about the genital wart-type of HPV. Forgot to include some more links because HPV can also cause cervical cancer, anal, and vulvar cancer... There's lots of info on this but I also like this web site:

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/HPV

Again, it all comes down to money.  Merck, the lovely people who brought you Vioxx and other wonderful drugs, is at it again and by making the vaccine mandatory, they are cashing in big time.  Not too many folks would probably get the vaccine otherwise, as it only protects against 2 strains of the cancer-causing HPV virus:  there are about 15 strains altogether.  Furthermore, it wears off after 5 years...not the miraculous "cancer preventative" they've touted it as, right?  If a person wants to get the vaccine, more power to them, but it should be a PERSONAL CHOICE.  The virus isn't airborne like others for which vaccinations were developed and the threat of an "epidemic" is hardly likely.  ASD IS, however, at epidemic rates and, until someone can pinpoint why this is, I say NO MORE MANDATORY VACCINATIONS added to the ones already in use. This is from the link you posted sunflowers, just to clear this up:

"Genital HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Human papillomavirus is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 100 different strains or types. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted"

I am not sure, but I believe the highlighted portion would indicate that 70 types of HPV are NOT sexually transmitted?

I'm a family doc, and I was trained in basic OB.  I am a parent of a son with autism.

I have not read this entire thread, but I am opposed to any mandate regarding this new vaccine.  It is being given to young girls and women for an STD of which it protects against only 2 strains that can possibly cause cancer.

Let's solve one vaccine issue, the really big one, before we go forcing yet another vaccine on our children!

WOW!
This is so sad! I was really looking forward to preventing HPV for my daughter. I was diagnosed with HPV at 19 and it required full anesthesia surgery to remove a large portion of my cervix which has precancerous cells. It was very scary. I don't know anyone who doesn't have HPV - all the women I have ever known well have had similar freezing procedures done to remove the cells. People do not realize that HPV has no symptoms most of the time - I have never had any HPV symptoms at all! If the cells were not detected on my pap during my pregnancy with Gage, I would have never known I had it.
Perhaps they will be able to work out the adverse effects in time for my daughter to get the vaccine.
Also, thank you foxl for keeping it objective for us. You really have to be careful about online sources.
HopeMommy198139266.6631365741I didn't read every post here, but someone asked why they are doing this. I think it's because our government can not force our young women to wear chastity belts! Thus, they feel this is probably the next best thing. Young women are not responding to the 'abstinence is best' preach.

What irritates me is I understand MOST men do not die from HPV. Most can carry it in their body their entire life without ever showing any symptoms. They carry and pass this virus to women. It is, unfortunately, the women who can develop the deadly cancer as a result of it.
So women might one day be mandated to take this vaccine, yet where is there a similar requirement or obligation for the men who perpetually hop from bed to bed using no protection?

I had pap smears 10 years ago that showed the possibility of HPV they said. They weren't sure. They recommended a biopsy. Three biopsies later they still were not 100% sure. I finally went to a fantastic womens clinic at the University of Washington. At my very first GYN appt with a new doctor there I told her of my history. She said, "Why don't we just do a DNA test to see for sure? This DNA test should clear up any ambiguity whatsoever." I had NO idea there was any such test to tell conclusively if one has HPV. But apparently they do and it's a very simple test. Well, I was glad to hear I did not have HPV. So the next time you women hear that you might have HPV, ask for the DNA test. It is NOT that expensive and it apparently will
give you more accurate results.

I was also told that the virus, like most viruses, does remain in your body forever unless you get the area removed. If you are getting negative HPV results, but later have HPV, it's because the virus is growing...but it grows very slowly in some people. It's growth rate depends on many factors - health habits, stress, some say the amount of vitamin C intake. Some believe that a high intake of vitamin C can slow it's growth. But some women will get full blown cancer in seven years whereas others will get cancer about two years. sunflowers39266.995775463My daughter will make a decision about this HERSELF, when she is an adult.
My daughter will make a decision about this HERSELF, when she is an adult.
I do understand about waiting and letting your daughter make the decision as an adult but by then it may be too late as she may be already exposed to the virus. I decided as mentioned above that we would have dialogue about it with our almost 17 year old daughter and make the decision before she gets exposed. She doesn't have and has not yet had a boyfriend so we wanted to talk about it now.

Merry

Some strains of HPV also cause various WARTS (or papillomas).

Verdict is not in for us yet -- we have at least 6 yrs.  I think however as a public health obligation, unless a great risk of side effects comes to light, my girls will get the vaccine as recommended by their pediatrician.  I have no idea if either of them will be become sexually active early, but if they do, I;d hate to see them included in the chain of transmission.  If it's not your kid who gets inoperable cervical CA as an adult, it could be someone else's.
