AYYYYY-MEN!
I HATE IQ tests, and not just because of Tuhina's. To try to summarize the abilities or potential of a human being, by one number ... is dehumanizing.
The topic of IQ tests and our kids has come up on this board periodically. Even though the following piece by Rick Ayers is not specifically about ASD kids and IQ tests, I thought it was an interresting read.

Love the "poppycock" remark!
I checked the Norwegian newspapers, and sure enough it was reported there the other week. The newspaper hyped it a bit by showing celebrity brothers. It would be like saying "Is John Travolta smarter than little brother Joey?" Who cares! People have their own unique talents and gifts, and a couple points on an IQ test is no more interesting than belly button lint.
Thanks for sharing the article. The myth of autistics usually being retarded is a pet peeve of mine, so this was definitely of interest.
Tests measure the ability to take tests. Intelligence is the ability to look at a problem in a way no one has thought of before...
Tests measure the ability to take tests. Intelligence is the ability to look at a problem in a way no one has thought of before...
To me IQ tests are rubbish, I love what Dad2Luck&Alan wrote. When my son was in the 2nd grade his test results said he was mild mentally retarded in math. At the end of 5th grade he tested out in math at an 8th grade level. Does not sound mild mentally retarded to me. Many kids have splinter skills and IQ's don't show their true skills.
