Video of My Guy - High Functioning Aspie | Autism PDD

Share

Disclaimer: Please don't watch if the high functioning level will upset you.
Here is a video of my high functioning Aspie kiddo. He has also received a PDD-NOS diagnosis which fits him to some extent because of his speech problems, gross & fine motor delays, constant noise 'stimming' and inability to understand certain things, ect. Anyway, he is such a great kid. I thought you might enjoy a peek into life with my son Gage! I am glad I copied the twins' dad and did this with him LOL I haven't made an interview style video of him before :)

OK let me clarify since this had people confused: he had gotten a PDD-NOS diagnosis from his neurologist, which makes more sense to me. However his behavioral therapist felt he has Asperger's Syndrome, although he doesn't quite "fit" an Aspie kid either! And of course the school considers him Autism, and his pediatrician still refers to him as "high functioning". LOL But the school considers him more Aspie than PDD-NOS or HFA. This is why we just don't quite "fit" into anything. I guess I consider him Aspergers AND PDD-NOS because those diagnosis both fit him in some way, but to pinpoint EXACTLY which one has been challenging as the neurologist and behavioral therapist (PhD) do not agree there. That is why I usually just say he has Autism Spectrum Disorder.

P.S. - the reason I ask him about the curly ligh bulbs at the store is because he memorizes TV commercials, and told me one at the store today about how these energy efficient bulbs prevent energy hogs! I thought it was cute, anyway.
HopeMommy198139265.8660416667Cute kid! - I'm a little confused.  Is he diagnosed with AS or PDD-NOS?

He is a wonderful ball of sparks & energy:)

I loved seeing HFA kids and search them out ever since Sarah was diagnosed so I could have something to thrive for:) Does he watch the "Hoobs?"  they say hubba hubba alot and Sarah is obsessed with them! I enjoyed watching him very much~very animated:) Thanks!

Great video

I would guess aspergers for sure. And perhaps ADHD.

thanks for sharing!

Is he dx with AS or PDD-nos? You can't be both.

My son is considered HFA over AS because of his language disorder. My son is more AS then HFA.

Edited the original post to explain further. He is def animated LOL we don't watch the Hoobs LOL I dont know where he got that from but he likes to say it a LOT!
HopeMommy198139265.8620486111He reminds me a fair bit of myself at that age
I don't know his history, but if he had any language delays, PDD-NOS is
probably a more accurate dx than asperger's.
I need to figure out how to get a new camcorder--old one got "lost" in the
move last year.I noticed that he follows your instructions really well! When you ask him to focus, redirect his attention he always does!

Sometimes my son appears distracted like that also but he doesn't get redirected as easily. On his potty he will start singing, acting goofy, playing with the toilet paper, kick his legs....it is impossible to get him to calm down while he's on the potty.

Is this just a personality trait? Is it him being his animated self or is it a part of ASD?

He's ADORABLE!

As a "man off the street," I'd peg him as simply ADHD if I just saw those.

VERY cute and smart!

Thanks everyone!
I am so glad you could understand what he was saying! No one ever seems to know what he is saying!
Oh and I should have added that he is completely different in school or in public than he is at home LOL and I cheated and filmed him on an especially good day when he wasn't hand flapping very much
I was very upset when he started to say those things about himself, but then he said he was a pancake. I'm not exactly sure why he did that when I got out the camera. He has some anxiety & depression, which the psychologist and the school feel is related to the understanding that he is different/ speech problems/ getting teased, ect. He is not going to take any meds for it at this time as I am too nervous to put him on medication as a child, but it is something we work on all the time. Building up his self esteem is a constant goal each day.
TY Foxl for saying that about pegging him as just ADHD! That is so cool. I know it is wishful thinking LOL but I would love for him to get to a point where he just seems "quirky" or like he has ADHD.
Many of you mentioned ADHD. None of his therapists or teachers have ever mentioned that he has ADHD, but he does take Melatonin each night or he is COMPLETELY unable to sleep. I will have to ask about this at our next appointment. I always just attributed his high energy level to his Autism.
If you guys would have seen him as a baby and toddler you would not believe it is the same kid! He used to just sit in the corner and roll cars on the floor. Didnt sit up, drink from a cup, ect forever and was totally unattached. I really attribute his improvements to ABA and the fact that he was diagnosed at 2.
He is a cutie!!  Thank you for sharing with us.  I was so curious to see the footage because my son is difficult pinpoint too.  He was first dx as ADHD.  I see similarities between my son and yours.  Mostly with the speech patterns and movement patterns.  Many of my sons movement issues are SPD related.

Ha - I loved it when he busted out the Transformer's song and talked about geoffecient bulbs, lol - he's awesome :)

But then it was sad when he was self deprecating :( - though at least he had a logical explanation.  I hope he's not hearing that stuff from other kids and that's just stuff he's hearing in the media and stuff.

He actually communicates really well when he's thinking through what he's trying to say, but you can tell that he's constantly getting distracted - the girls are like that at times, too.  He does a very good job when he's reigning it in, though, and I'd bet this ability to focus and hold focus improves as he matures.  He'll need the focus when he's a "scientist building robots" :)

Arwyn's a cutie, too ;)
