Inappropriate face making | Autism PDD

Yah and sometimes his faces make him look like he is under extreme anxiety, but he's not! And the face will appear for about 10 secs then his face relaxes back into normal position. It's just so weird and people ask me about it so I thought I'd check w/ you all about it. Thanks for the replies!

My boys make weird faces, and they look so old when they make them. It's just random times, and the faces never fit the context of the situation, but I know exactly what you mean...  Jonah does the finger twisting...  here lately he has been stimming so much more....  some days it is almost constant from the time he wakes up until he goes to bed...  And then he'll get really "clear" and completely stop, and almost seem like he's fine. Eye contact, attempting to communicate...  no rhyme or reason for the ups and downs...  (except right before they know they are going to their dads...) My 8 yr. old will make some faces that will literly make you laugh he loves to be tickled under the chinn so he will come at you with a face and the mouth wide open teeth showing look.

I've often wondered why ds makes such weird faces that don't have anything to do w/ a situation or emotion. I know he isn't dx'd yet, but I've just never witnessed this in other children. I mean I know other children make silly faces to get laughs or show disgust or normal things like that. But ds does this ALL the time. I wish I could show you a picture it's hard to describe. And there is never a reason for it. Almost like it's a tick like w/ Tourettes, but I know it's not that. He'll just be say sitting at the table eating and then make a weird face for like 5-10 seconds and then it's gone and he's back to normal as if nothing happened. I find it quite cute actually, but I have no idea why he does it. Sometimes it seems just so inappropriate and out of place. Sometimes they look like faces of distress or disgust, but for no reason. And I'll watch him anticipating a reaction like maybe he's upset about something, but then the face just disapears and he's back to normal and nothing is wrong. Anyone else have this?

Ok I fogot about another quick question. I've read about finger twisting. What exactly is that? I think ds does it if I understand it right. Is it when they do odd finger movements like have fingers crossing and what not? Or is it to explain wringing the hands? Just wondering if anyone's child does it and what exactly are they describing. Thanks.

Amber

Mine does...he doesn't do any flapping etc....but his fingers are literally "twisting" all the time.  Like he'll twist 2-3 fingers together, and his hands are always very stiff.  He also used to always hold his own hands....In preschool they used to make him put his hands in his pockets...then the twisting got worse.

At one time I went through old photo albums (when he was about 4), and I swear it was the wierdest thing, ALL of his pictures he's holding his hands funny....I just never really noticed it until they pointed it out to me.  Oh yeah - and it's always worse when he's walking.
(I hope I explained that right!)

Ok so that is what ds does too. I wasn't sure if I understood what they meant by the finger thing but he does that and it is more noticable when ds is walking or running also. His hand flapping has also increased a lot in the last mth. Or perhaps I never noticed it much before I don't know. I just retook some of the online tests I had done before. I can't believe he has already changed just in the last mth! Some things that he didn't do before or rarely did he does a lot now, and some things he has improved on. It's hard to keep up with.

But anyone know about the faces or have any experience with it?
