Selective Mutism | Autism PDD

My son doesn't have the formal selective mutism diagnosis, but he definitely has it.  His psychiatrist kept his label as PDD-NOS and is unwilling to add any other diagnosis to it because it is redundant.  He suggested Prozac if the mutism continues into his grade school years.

It sounded like mine too ... almost still does, except now it's more like selective withdrawal ...

The SLPs kept insisting to me that she COULD not talk, I was not sure but that she WOULD not.   Especially under certain conditions.

Complex issue, knowing the difference.  My guess is, yes, considering some of the social probs, having both at once is surely a possibility, though.

Does anyone have any experience with a Selective Mutism dx? I had never heard of it before and I'm reading about it and it totally sounds like my dd. www.selectivemutism.org

She was dx with mild ASD by one Dr. and DD by another. Her only language problem is sometimes she gets pronouns reversed and is slightly behind in her language development, but just by a few months, still in normal range. Her biggest problems are at school and social settings.

Now I'm starting to wonder if she wasn't misdiagnosed or perhaps has both ASD and Selective Mutism. Maybe I'm wrong but does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks!
