Question | Autism PDD

Six months ago I would have said I did not want dd labeled autistic.  I am still not sure I would want her labeled MR.  Would it trash her credibility in later life?  Dunno.

I would definitely research that one before letting anyone use it ... my DH, BTW, WAS labeled MR until he was 13.  Was in Special Ed, etc.  and was not let out ... BUT ... that was in the 60's.

We are hoping to get title 19 to help with the doctor bills and so he would be able to get extra speech therapy and ot. He is going to preschool through the school system and that is covered. he only gets speech once a week and ot once a month.

My son has always been social, He would go up to total strangers and try to
initiate conversation. He just didnt know how to converse and how to play
with his peers in an appropriate manner. He fooled our pediatrician because
he had great eye contact when he needed too. It was only when his stims
set in that he was diagnosed. You know your child the best. I knew that my
son probably had autsim before he was two. In my state you get services
because of the dx. Even high functioning kids need the dx and services to
deal with possible behaviors and language delays.Tuhina has very few social skills for PEERS!  She can do okay with adults, unless she is feeling threatened by a peer or other situation ... and she does great with certain kids (not exactly her age, several yrs older or younger) whom she has chosen to accept ... I took my son to the psycoligist on friday to get some tips on how to help with my sons attention issues, running away, and potty issues. I spoke with him a bit on pdd and autism saying my son is very social with adults but not so much with kids. I said he will play near them or want to play with what they are playing with but doesn't really interact. Anyway he said that when someone has autism they are not social with anyone. So I said , really because I've read that alot of autistic people are social but not properly social with peers. Am I wrong? Also They spoke with me about possibly getting and MR dx because my son tests at the 70th level on the scale thing and 68 at school. He is 4 and he has about 2 year old language and 18 months understanding and all around delay.Do you think i should try to get this dx so I can get my son more services? i just dont know what to do.YES!!!!!  Go to a DEV ped or a Ped Neuro for sure.  My son is completely social with my Hubby, myself and his 5 year old sister (he is 2.5), but does not interact with peers. He is on the spectrum and was DX'd with PDD-NOS and now we are getting a multitude of services.

No, you're right, the psychologist is wrong.  Most autistic kids that I've seen are social, but just don't know how to do it right.  The withdrawn child who spurns all social contact is a rarity, from what I can tell.  Also, your child's scoring low on the assessments because of his language delay, not because of MR.  I can't say that he isn't MR, but if he's straddling the border (68,70) with a two year language delay and these are normal, verbal IQ tests, then I'd say he likely is not MR.  If, however, that label would get more, appropriate services, I'd probably take it.

Well my son is dx'd autism and is most of the time very good with adults...has no relationships with peers.  He may not always have appropriate eye contact, but can have simple conversations and stay aware of them...children on the other hand, it's like they don't exist to my son.

As far as getting an MR dx...does the school provide a lot of services to you?  I guess if you felt that you could get more out of the school then it might be beneficial to get an official dx...also if you were thinking more along the lines of ABA you might need that official dx too...I think that varies by state though...and probably even city...I know the only ABA therapy in my area is offered only to austim dx through organizations...we don't have ABA in the schools.

Hope that helps some.

You know it's strange . Why is it that a parent, such as myself, does alot of research, reading and asking questions, can learn more about autism than a doctor ?
