I read that we all have stims but not as obvious as ASD kids. My best friend has to play with her hair while she drives and is stopped at a red light. My mother in law has to clear her throat before she speaks. I think we prefer to call these habits instead of stims.
I hear great things about the Nintendo WII for active ASD kids, must look into getting one for ds.
"stims" (self-stimulatory behaviors) are our children's responses to sensory
Holly, Mason uses his peripheral vision too and only while playing video games and computer games...we know it's not anything wrong with his eyes because he has had his eyes checked...I honestly don't know why he does this...and I haven't noticed it at other times like I notice it when he is playing video games.
Also, a note on the Nintendo Wii--we have one too and Mason loves it...Mason is a very active and energetic boy, but he does love his video games too, so I love the fact that he is active now even when playing video games!! Mason's favorite is the bowling...his scores are well into the 200's...I don't know how he does it! And now we just bought the big brain academy so he is going to get to learn while playing too! The Wii is the best thing to come out of video games since this video game craze has started!! (And no...I don't work for Nintendo, lol)
my son is jumping all the time in front and on ppl when he gets to know them . so hard to control him sometimes. nothing stops him unless i get firm with him. i do believe its a stim . he also asks the person's name hundreds of time even though he knows the name.I was wondering if looking at things with their peripheral vision is a stim? Or is it a sensory thing?
My son only does this when playing Xbox. He will at times--stand completely sideways and look from the side of his eyes.
And....is a stim---really a stim if it can be stopped? Or is it the same as a "nervous" habit?
My son's stim is jumping while playing xbox. He ends up inches from the TV and even will jump in front of the other person playing. The girls will start yelling--"Jacob, sit down!!". Thats all we hear all the time. He sits. Without even pausing. With-in 15 sec---he's back up again. When he watches someone playing xbox--he flaps and jumps!
Who ever said video games make couch-potato kids??????
