how do you entertain your kids? | Autism PDD

When J was younger, I had a kitchen cainet filled with tupperware, spoons,
old pots, etc. that he could "play with to his heart's content.

Musical instruments are fantastic, get a tub of shakers, little drums,
tamborines, triangle, xylophone--excellent redirection for bangers and
shakers.

We wet to the park and played simple games like throwing pinecones and
chasing them together.

He loved to cook, so that was a simple activity we could do together
(dumping, stirring..etc)

He loved the water table and sandbox.

He plays with toys, but these were the things that kept him rapt in the
early days. Hope it helps.
He still loves to take a walk around the neighborhood to add to his "rock
collection" and "leaf collection"My son still likes to play the Hallabaloo game. We have the DVD version. He
had to learn to play it at first and then he could play it with other people or
by himself. He also likes his gameboy. We do have an indoor bowling and
small indoor soccer. My son was taught to play with his toys step by step.
Independent play does not come easily. I am sure the consultant can help
you in this area. Good Luck

My son loves the outdoors too.  Indoors, he likes to play with plastic animals or dinosaurs and creates an outdoor environment for them with play mats and plastic trees.  He also likes to play with his plastic sea creatures in the sink or tub.

Also, one of his favorite crafts is to glue wild animal pictures cut from magazines onto a large piece of paper and make a collage.

As a treat I will sometimes hide those plastic easter eggs inside the house for the kids to find.  I may even put a little something inside the eggs to encourage them (puzzle piece, M&M candy, etc..)

Good luck!

Trampoline, swing set, dry erase board, and slip n slide! That's all that keeps my kid entertained. Hi all...I hope everyone is well.

I was wondering, how do you all entertain your children?  I have the hardest time with my 6 year old son, because he doesn't play with toys at all, color, look at books,
build with blocks, etc.  He will watch his dvd's, like the wiggles, or disney songs.  He only watches bits and pieces of musical dvd's.  He doesn't have any interest in cartoons or movies.  He also doesn't enjoy computers.  So, as you can see, I am at a loss for how to play with him.

He loves to be outside, and go in the pool.  Unfortunately, I can't do this all day long.
When he is inside, he doesn't know what to do with himself, so he throws things, or taps things, like a broom or a spatula.
I have a consultant coming over tuesday to help with potty training, so I am hoping to get some help with this also.  At school, they did work on a program called "toy conditioning", as it was on his IEP, but there has been little to no progress in this area.

Any advice or ideas is greatly appreciated.

If being outside is the one thing the your son is interested in, how about bringing some aspects of the outdoors into the house.  You said he likes the pool.  Maybe you could put some water in the tub or sink and then coax him into playing with some boats or have some action figures go swimming.  You might even be able to find a toy pool that would interest him.

Does he like the sandbox?  Maybe he would enjoy playing with moonsand.  The have several sets, including one that has sandcastle molds.

Does he like to collect things like pine cones or stones outside?  Bring them inside and load them onto a toy truck and push them around.

If he likes playground equipment, maybe you could interest him in a toy replica.
