My three year old used to do this, as well. Talk about yuck! Well, we eventually changed his crib into a toddler bed, and he stopped it, viola! Just like that.
I remember reading somewhere (probably on here, lol!) that feces smearing can be done as a sensory thing, in which case, you may try substituting the feces for something else he can smear around like play slime, or maybe he's trying to escape from the nap time? Jason is getting to the point now where he doesn't need a daily nap, and the times when I do lay him down for one...the diaper comes off again, though he never has bm's at that time of day, thank goodness!
Just my experiences, though!
Thanks for the input, ladies! He was exhausted yesterday and had already had a bowel movement so I thought he'd just go to sleep! He had litterally spent over 2 hours sliding non-stop at the McDonalds playland! After the whole rigamorole was over, his room was cleaned, he was bathed and he had some dinner, he sweetly snuggled me and I forgave the little turkey.Oh yes Nikolas when he was 3. And always during nap time. I would put him in there, wait 15 minutes and check him. He would always go during nap time and then couldn't sleep cause he had a dirty diaper. Maybe he was trying to get it out I don't know. It did eventually stop though. Actually to think about it it stopped when he started coming to me and tapping his diaper to tell me it was dirty and he wanted changed. Hi there. Our older dd did this ALL the time--during the day while
playing,
naptime, etc. One time she handed me a sock that she had put her poop
in (gotta love being a mom!). What a MESS!
SO, our doc suggested something. We call it "SUPER BELT!" At night, we
would get silver duct tape aka SUPER BELT and wrap it around her diaper.
She was unable to get her diaper off, which saved us from finding her in
the a.m. soiled. It sounded barbaric at the time, to tape dd's diaper, but
we tried it & it worked. She was even rather excited for SUPER BELT! each
night. It was so nice waking up & not having to once again wash the
sheets, blankets, bed, wall (LOL!), and dd!
Our youngest dd still can't undress at all. But, when the time comes I will
pull SUPER BELT back out for sure!
I love it!!!! We will be embracing super belt! Wyatt loves the incredibles! Thanx!
Anyhow, the official term for what you're dealing with is "fecal smearing." Sometimes knowing the official term can help you easier locate other online resources on it.
Good luck with everything.
I am thinking of trying superbelt, too!! C has been known to take off diapers in the middle of the night and whatever falls out may get the smear treatment.
