Sarah had regression only when she was sick with allergies and it was more of really just zoning us out and not talking at all ..once she was feeling better she bounced right back to herself. She has never had fever so a couple of times she was really sick with an respiratory infection, and eye, ear infection with no outward signs other than zoned out. Could he be sick? She would also get this way with major changes or holidays..chaos or loud places.. she also bounced back but I really worried when she got this way...Hang in there:) Sarah has progressed very well but it was not always forward..it was more like one step forward..2 steps back..one step forward..ect...but over time you could see the progress however slowly it took her to get there:)
I edited to add..even though we never had major regressions unless she was sick... it is a change in his condition worth mentioning to his his pediatrician or dev. ped.:)
Does he qualify for ESY? I don't know what they could do about it this summer, but it might be a good idea if you document these changes to show he needs summer school to avoid regression. When Wyatt regresses, especially if it's verbally or socially, I feel like I've lost a piece of him. Even though it's usually temporarily, it breaks my heart. Hugs for you, mama!
Just one other possibility ...
I'm so sorry; I know how upsetting this must be on you. I would definitely contact the school to get him into the spec. ed summer program. My son will start next week. I heard they don't want more than 2 weeks to go by without school so regression doesn't happen. We now put our dd into ESY every summer...we noticed she would regress in the summer when she was taken out of the structured environment of school. Contact your local autism society, they sent us a bunch of information about local programs and we picked the one best suited for our dd...the program helps her stay on target for the upcoming school year...
R seems to have these periods once or twice when he zones us out and stims a lot but he seems to get out of it in time
I really like tzoya's idea of ESY
lately over the past month Ryan has totally went backwards in alot of ways. We use to be able to ask him simple questions and now he won't answer them anymore, the eye contact is bad, he seem like he needs things more in a routine and he never needed that before. The worst has been the contstant repeating phrases from tv commercials, he has done that in years.
I have always heard that it is common for our children to take a step backward here and there but this is different I have never experienced him going this backward and not followed by some improvment or atleast where he was before going backward.
The only thing that I can think of that has changed is him not being in school. If this is it we have never experienced this reaction in the past.
He truely is a different child..it is very upsetting.
Has anyone else experienced this with thier child?
