Confused...scared?? | Autism PDD

You cannot even FIND ABA of any type or sort in my part of the country (rocky mountians)

My son is now 6 yr and went back to the dev. ped after not seeing him since last summer (1 yr ago). The dev. ped told us that he has shown no improvement in his language.

He said that he is afraid that he might have a form of autism where his language never improves?? what is he refering to?

He wants to see him back in Oct. after being in a autistic classroom for a couple of months. He has never been in a autistic classroom ,just a DD class for the past 3yrs. This year will be his first. He is hoping with a more language based program his language will improve.

I am just sooo scared, that my son will never develop language past what he has now..and what he has now I would not call functional at all..he tests on the 2-3yr range.

What do you think he is going to tell us..what could he be thinking?

Can you talk with your ped. about whether he would advise getting him into and intensive ABA or ABA/VB program?  Perhaps you could advocate for it.  This is the area where these interventions are really supposed to shine, but you're right, cost is prohibitive for most of us without public support, but it would seem that you have a good case to advocate for much different interventions since he isn't making progress with what the school's been doing with him so far.  probably a stupid question.... I always thought that autism programs use ABA?Some do, some don't.  ABA is very expensive to implement, so districts usually try to provide as much group instruction as possible, which precludes 1:1 discrete trials type teaching much of the time.  You definitely want to check and see what they use in the program he's going into.Sorry you rec'd that news & wish I could be of more help. Has anyone
recommended using PECS or other communication system? Does your son get any speech or ABA?   I do not think you have exhausted
all the interventions yet. At 6 he is young. My son had 2=3 words at 2 1/2.
With intense ABA and speech he is now at a 4yr level. He is 5 and will be 6
in the fall. With interventions specifically targeting his speech/language
issues he should improve. Now is the time to go for the most effective
interventions that you can. I don't know that I have anything all that valuble to ad, but my thoughts are, if you have tried intense ABA, what about trying one of the other approaches as well.  Like floortime, RDI, VB.  Just a thought.  I will pray for you and your family during this most difficult time.

I have him in speech x2 wk this summer while out of school. He has never had ABA. I wish I could afford it but I can't. I am hoping the autic classroom will be using ABA.

Thank you for your prayers!

If you make a concious effort to get him everything he needs over the next few years, I think youll see an improvement.  Good Luck to you!

I highly recommend a VB/ABA program and a private pediatric speech-language pathologist.  My son, who just turned 6, has a significant language delay.  He has learned to speak because of specialized therapy.  Our school district offers EC classes starting when children are 3 years old.  ABA is not provided in our schools.  Also, while the speech therapists at school are wonderful, they are not specialists.  Please talk to an advocate in yr area. In our state (CA.) if you can prove that
the districts program had no benefit and or regression, you have a good
case for Intensive intervention services. But if the district's program had
some benefit the case is harder to prove. See how your speech is done.
Increase those hours right away if you can. learn how you can model
language for him and do it consistantly. I think there are some ST that are
familiar with VB/ABA methods. If you find one then ask for advice as to
what to do at home in between therapies. See if your insurance will pick up
some of the costs. One of my good friends son did not talk until he was 7.
Only with ABA and a good speech pathologist did he begin to talk. Your son
is 6 and already verbal so dont give up.Different Roads to Learning (www.difflearn.com) is a great catalog that carries ABA and VB products.  They have guide books, including one that just came out called "The Verbal Behavior Approach."  It is a step-by-step guide that sells for .95.
