sense of humor in the children? | Autism PDD

Luke is only 2, but he definitely finds things funny -- the types of things that 2 yr olds would understand, like if I put a bowl on my head, or sneaak a peek at him in a mirror, etc.

Yes, like Luke, ds is only 2 as well. But he laughs often and does find silly things funny like most 2 yr olds. He has had inappropriate laughter, but he definitely has lots of real.

I think some of the laughing is just that inapproperate laughter they have. I also think many times they do something they have seen from a cartoon or movie that was supposed to be funny on there and they just immitate it like the belching and laughing afterward. I know my son still has trouble understandign idioms and being able to laugh approperately or understand a joke. He sure does memorize them though!the very first time my daughter ever laughed was when she was about four months old, sitting on her grandma's lap on the bathroom counter, looking at herself in the mirror. she had never, ever even giggled before that time, and as soon as she saw her reflection, she busted out in this huge loud gut-rumbling laugh. it was the funniest thing ever, so i grabbed a camera and took pics. the pics didnt turn out perfect though. i was laughing so hard at the situation that i had tears running down my face and i couldnt hold the camera straight.

now she usually does a lot of the inappropriate laughter, laughing at nothing. the strangest part of it is that she started it when she was 2, just a few days after her great-grandma died. she would lay in her crib at night, in the dark, and laugh for hours - at absolutely nothing. so anytime she starts doing that 'laughing at nothing' thing, we just say her great-grandma is paying her a visit. sometimes i think her great-grandma is her guardian angel.
My DS has a wonderful sense of humor, and tries very hard to be funny.
Sometimes he's wildly off the mark, or inappropriate, and sometimes he
hits the target dead-on. God love him for always trying! He loves
comedy, and can't get enough of The Simpsons, Futurama and Mad TV.   I
Often joke that I gave birth to the perfect playmate for DH!My kiddos, especially my 6 yr old have a hard time with humor.  Certain forms of humor, such as sarcasm, etc... are lost on them.  But, as already stated, visual humor is what they will understand the most.It is funny because I think our kids are just like all the regular kids out there. My dd who has ppd-nos has a marvelous dry sense of humor although the jokes dealing with communication like sarcasm are lost on her, but they are lost on my 7 year old too. My "NT" son who is 7 has a terrible sense of humor..not that he is serious...but his jokes aren't funny. Nothing is worse than riding around in a car full of 6 year old boys telling each other jokes that aren't funny and they are all laughing. I don't get it

He will laugh at his big brother's prat falls, but when he laughs at most things, it looks like he's really copying what all the rest of us are doing and he will repeat something if he notices it makes us laugh.  He is very ticklish...so you can certainly tell when he's laughing for real...he's got the best belly-laugh.  His main idea of humor is hiding and jumping out at us.....I just call him "Mister Trickster"

I have noticed that many of the parent seem to have quite a sense of humor.  Do the children show signs of recognizing humor?

My grandson intentionally burps and then says "was that YOU?"  ... (yes its from some tv show I am told).. but he laughs when he does it and seems to think its quite funny.  I know the first time I heard it I thought it was hystercial.

Actually we were talking about this in chat last night.  I know Gabe thinks everything is funny.  And Jeffrey, lol, well he is so serious at times that he can be quite funny.  But don't dare at laugh at him.  My brother and me do work with him on being able to recognize a joke.  He still has problems with that.

My son doesn't really understand if you tell him something funny.  However, if you or he DOES something funny he wil laugh.  Or if he says something funny (without realizing) and you laugh he will smile and say "YOU'RE funny."

I agree my son thinks everything is funny also especially when he gets a loud belch (rootbeer) he will look at us and say did you hear that?? Also from a movie took me a while to figure out why he did it until the kids were watching the movie ELF and that is where he learned it. But most of the time he only thinks he is funny when he is doing annoying things. I did notice that he was laughing at a commercial that was pretty funny. Now he used to think it was funny if someone was crying but he starting to recognize emotions so he knows crying means you are sad. He also always announces "I crying" if he is crying and "I laugh" when he lauhgs, I don't know if anyone elses kids do this. But I do belive he has some sense of humor even though sometimes it is not appropriate......he always makes me laugh but I am his mommy.
