Equestrian therapy?? | Autism PDD

Anyone trying this with their kids.  I just found out today that if I request this, Early Intervention will cover it. I looked up a little on the web, and it looks like their is documentation that it can help ASD kids.  I would love to hear anyone elses experiences. For some it seems to help. I am a horsey person myself and did some work with Shawn on our own horses. He was not big into it. He would rather jump on the trampoline. I think it depends on the kiddo. But if it is covered it is definately worth the try. Animal time teaches kids a lot of other stuff too.

Lachlan loved his time on a horse and I can see what they mean about counter balance and using muscles (not being a horse person this is all new to me). If it's covered, I would absolutely give it a go.

Hate to be negative........we did this, however my son was SO ALLERGIC to the massive amounts of horse hair and dander we had to quit! Just a thought if your child has any allergy issues at all...The one available here has a long waiting period and you need to fill out a chunk of papers with doctors approval and physicals..wiavers.ect.. we didnt do it. It was kinda out of the way out in another small town.  She would of loved it though:) ShelleyR39264.408275463We don't do "therapy" per se. But, my ds takes horseback riding lessons from a mom of an autistic child who is getting her certification to do the therapy. He LOVES it! I have heard of some kids having issues with not liking horseback - but we have a difficult time getting ds OFF the horse! Both my kids take it and love it. We are fortunate to have them just 10 minutes away and it costs only per half-hour lesson. This is HUGELY cheaper than any other place I've heard! It's a wonderful form of OT/PT. There is tons of balance involved and it
works the core muscles for those with low muscle tone. There is much more
to it. EI covers it for a reason--it is an extremely therapeutic activity for our
kids with sensory and focus issues. And something fun they can particpate
in!My son is taking it and LOVES it!   I will post more info and a pic later, no time right this second.   If EI will pay, GO FOR IT!   My little guy "graduates" from his first round of sessions tomorrow and is giving a demonstration ride for all the families.   We are so proud.
