I am assuming she has an IEP if she has a DX and has trouble in reading which is impacting her ability her academics in the classroom. Have you talked to the principal yet? Have they brought your daughter through a Student Intervention Team meeting? If there are kids struggling in any area of academics, a intervention plan should be in place. I would mention this when you talk. Good luck!Hi. My daughter Danielle, 9years old has PDD-NOS. She is entering the 4th grade but what is troubling me is that she cannot read and that I have been asking them(her school to use a specific program that was working prior to us moving from a previous school). they have yet to adhere to my wishes. Can anyone give me some advice on how to handle this with the school district or go about funding the purchase of this program so maybe I can obtain it at home to work with her. Thanks!Assistive Technology is typically for students who have trouble expressively communicating and have fairly good receptive language. Sounds to me your daughter CAN read, she just has trouble TRYING to read. I would strongly suggest you call and talk to the principal regarding this matter.
Tami, request assistive technology for her. Assistive technology is not only for speech, but can help with reading also.....Plus there are computer programs to help with reading. Probably, the reason why that they haven't helped too which is NOOO excuse is that you need to know the language/terminology to get their attention. They will say that they would have to do an evaluation for assistive technology, maybe. If they do, let them and that will get the ball to rolling!!!
Good luck!!

Thanks for the input, I have spoken to the principal from the primary school but will have to speak to the intermediate school principal regarding this matter. Yes--she can communicate and has a diagnosis and receives both speech and OT services but the reading program the classroom was using was solely phonics based and she has trouble with a phonics based program so I recommended that they try using a rote memory program along with the phonics based and I haven't had any results in them getting the rote memory program and she is just so interested in reading it's really making me angry that they won't listen.
Do you know if that program was listed in the IEP at your previous school? Obviously you as a parent has a concern that needs to be addressed at this time. Document and keep making phone calls and be persistent and they should get the hint. I wish you the best of luck...it's a shame you as well as many other parents have to fight to get what you want.
