I am looking into working this method with a therapist, the closest one to us is about 200 miles away. The city it is in, I do have family there. so the trip wouldn't be quite so bad. It is also something I would like to learn and work with him at home.
Please keep us posted. Are you looking into working with a therapist or just trying to learn on your own? playproject.com has a great CD-Rom lecture you can purchase that shows video clips of parents doing the techniques with their kids and also gives you great information.
Yes we do this and I love it. We actually use Applied Verbal Behavior/ABA and Floortime which has been a good mix for my 3 year old son. We have an in-home AVB/ABA program and have a Floortime consultant who trains us. She has also trained our ABA tutors who use some of the floortime methods as well. We do the P.L.A.Y. project and you can find more info on this at playproject.org. Our consultant comes 1-2 times a month and video tapes us, models techniques and gives us suggestions of things to work on. I posted a thread a while ago that discussed some of the techniques. I 'm sure you could find it through a search.
The thing I love of Floortime is that it teaches you how to be a better play partner and get great responses from your child. It really becomes a way of interacting everyday and isn't really "therapy". I believe the ABA is doing great things for my son as well. We have seen humongous improvements in such a short time.
I believe a few others will chime in who also use Floortime. I believe Kristy is on vacation, but that has been the primary therapy for her son and he is doing quite well.
We just started private OT and speech therapy and this is what they are using, and its been only 2 weeks and its been great for my boys. They have been through early intervention therapy(not sure what method they were using) and preschool and this is the first time they run to therapy with huge smiles on their faces. And I have seen progress already.
I just wanted to give a quick THANKS, I am really excited with the idea that my little man will get something out of all of this and that he may POSSIBLY enjoy it as well. He is one of 4 children, Marcus (7), Zoe (7 w/ADD), Mason (6 w/ADD) and of course my Skylar (4 1/2 autism/adhd). I look forward to hearing more!!! I have a 4 1/2 year old son who was just recently diagnosed with autism and severe ADHD. He has one advantage over many autistic children, that being he has a very large vocabulary, but his speech is very delayed. ( I know, makes no sense to me either). Anyway, we have done a large amount of research on this subject, and a friend (who also has 2 autistic 4year olds) suggested that we check out www.floortime.org I must say, I found a lot of useful information on that site. And feel that it is definitely worth looking into and trying with my own child.
