Clearing his throat. | Autism PDD

Nicholas has been clearing his throat a lot lately. So much so that people have been commenting on it. Yesterday we were at my brothers and both my nieces said what is he doing and you should go to the Dr. I’m not sure but I suspect it is from the medication (Adderall) he started a couple months ago. Any thought?I don't think it's a stim. Throat clearing is one of the most common ticks
(as in Touretts - though you need a number of ticks for at least 3 month
to get a dx).
My ds sometimes has a throat clearing tick when stressed, it stays for a
few month and then goes away. When he tried out stimulants it came
back full force. It stopped when we stopped the stimulant.
Here is what I heard about ticks: They are also a neurobiological thing
and very common. Age 4-7 is the most common time to develop them,
they peak by age nine and most kids loose them as they grow older.
Stimulants don't cause them but can make them stronger. Some kids
learn to modify their ticks but it is not something that they can really
control - kind of like a hick-up.
As long as it is not too bothersome to your kid I would not worry about it
too much. But mention it to the do the stimulat did not cause it but did
bring it out more. Look out for other ticks developing as well. Thanks, when I ask him about it he does it more just to spite me, he tends to do thing like thatThis is a new stim for Adam.  He told me he likes the way it feels.  If I ask him he can control it.  That is how I determined it wasn't due to the meds.  My perfectly fine Nt neighbor girl did this for an entire summer. It started out because she had a cold, but she did it a long while after. He will probably stop sooner or later, as long as he is not ill.Hi John, I would talk to DR. about this.It could be medication and it could be allergies, or a new stim. Let us know what you find out. This could be a stim (it's a common one) or it could be Tourette's. Get it checked out with a doctor.Thank you

Throat clearing was one of my oldest sons tourettes tics.  It was intentified by some medications, so I would definitely talk to your doc about the Adderall.
