New York and Medicaid | Autism PDD

if you have high income you cannot qualify for medicaid. but i have heard that if you are on ssi you qualify for medicaid. by the way in in new york an dit took 2 months to get ssi as long you submit all proof. and medicaid 30 days. What I like about NY is that you can get state health coverage even if you're in a higher income bracket.  I was reading that there is Child Health Plus A (medicaid) and B for higher income.  What I would like to know is do they have the same coverage?  And how much ST and OT does it cover per week if anyone knows????

My daughter is getting ST, OT, and PT through the school district and there isn't any out of pocket expense there.  I'm happy with the amount she's recieving as well.  I guess I'm not sure if you were in a position where you didn't like the services and wanted to go outside the school if Medicaid covered that.  I need to get down to the SS offices soon and apply as well.  I've heard so many different things so I'm not sure what to expect in my situation either.  I think at the very least, our kids would be in the system so God forbid, if something were to happen to us or our spouses, they'd get some $$ every month.

In NY, Can your child still get medicaid through qualifying for SSI even if the family's income is high?  Also, how much speech and OT does it cover, if you know....I believe it was SSI at the county offices. My wife could not remember. It took 3 months. I said above 1 year - I was confused, it took a year to get signed up for respite services.

Thanks for the info...we've been considering a move there (DH is entertaining some interesting job leads there), and this is good info to know.

I haven't bothered with applying for SSI (weird, because my mom works in the Social Security Disability office!), because according to the guidelines I've read, DH makes too much, though it's much less than 80k a year right now.  I guess I ought to bite the bullet and apply, though.

Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for that info.  I'm in NY and need to get going on applying for my dd.  have heard it takes a long time and can be a pain but good to know it's worth it.  My dh makes OK $ on paper, so wasn't sure whether or not to go for it (although it's less than 80k) Guess I better get down there.....

I just wanted to say it was a long process but we finally have a medicaid benefits card for my son. If you have an ASD dignosis, plow thru the paperwork it is worth it. Along the way we were told (by the people processing us) we made too much money and wouldn't get any benefits (we gross 80K). Well we got the card and it has made life much easier. I have marginal health care insurance thru work with copays, deductibles and so much red tape I receive bills that are over 2 years old b/c it takes the health care provider and the insurance company that long to figure it out the billing. Now I just hand them the medicaid card and my insurance card. When everyone is done fighting the unpaid balance that the insurance company used to send to me, now goes to medicaid. The card will pay for any health or mental health costs that your insurance does not cover. If you do not have insurance it will cover all costs. If insurance is available thru work, you have to buy/use it.

Jusy wanted to pass that along as the system tends to delay/dissuade you even though they must know the card is really good for you. It took about a year to get the card

I am so glad you brought this up, it's so helpful to those of us who are contemplating a move to NY.  Was this done through SSI or the HCBS waiver?  Or do you just go and apply for Medicaid like anyone else?  Someone up there told me the paperwork can take 6-8 mos. Is that true?  We're moving in a few weeks and I'm going to have to do all this.  It's so different in every state.
