ASD and developmental delays. I thought that was kind of strange thinking they were essentially the same thing, but maybe not. Anyway, now we go back to the pediatrcian and start the ball rolling for the ABA and VBA. Pretty psyched about that. My only concern in reading the report was that in a lot of places he mixed the kids up. They really are very different, and he had Andrew doing a lot of things Andrew doesn't do, that's Nikolas. He also said Andrew had poor/fleeting eye contact but I watched them have a "conversation" (couldn't understand what Andrew was saying but he was gibbering) for a good 15 minutes and looked him in the eye the entire time. It was very much a give and take exchange. Andrew's eye contact is very close to perfect. So I really suspect its a wrong diagnosis on Andrew. I pointed those things out but the Dr. argued with me. He has to be 70 or more I suspect he doesn't remember. But it will get Andrew the VBA so I am not going to argue too much at this point. For whatever reason people tend to roll them into one person.
HOW long did you wait?
Congratulations and may services follow soon!
For the diagnosis? 2 years. ugh. Wow. I knew it had been a long time! That is the pits.Well, I am glad you finally got the dx, after waiting for so long (two years, yes?) to get it.
I do hope it will open some doors for you and the boys...good luck!
Although it's a scary dx, I'm glad the waiting is finally over...now you can focus on getting them the help they need and deserve!
I'm guilty of rolling twins into one...I have a friend with 8 yr old twins...we have been friends since high school so I have known the boys since they were born and I still can't tell them apart!! I think she purposely dresses them the same when they visit "auntie Niki" just to mess with me, lol...they get a kick out of teasing me about it though. LOL! I actually do that sometimes, dress them the same to mess with people. Thanks! I am hoping this is going to open more doors. My son has playmates that are twins. One is slightly taller so that is how I
can tell the difference. My son loves playing with them because he gets
double the attention. They are 1 year younger so they are more socially
matched as well. Good luck with the VB/ABA it made all the differance for
my son. It is so good with speech/language acquisition.
congrats.
i got a combo when my son got first dx. pdd nos, dev. delay, echolalia and possibel aspergers.
Autism IS a developmental delay, you are entirely correct. But many doctors put "developmental delays" in, separately, because, to them, that is code for cognitive impairment, ie, below average mental capacity. In a child as young as your son, it's difficult to say if there is any mental retardation present. I wouldn't worry about it. All human beings are born with their individual levels of cognitive horsepower. If they have more, that will show in time. If they have less, there is nothing that can be done about that that won't be helped by the sorts of interventions a child gets for autism, anyway.it bothers me too that he had the kids confused !!!!
But hey atleast now they both qualify for services
