Allergist, etc... | Autism PDD

Hello again,

I plan to take Ed to the allergist tomorrow for the first time.. I want him tested for environmental and/or, possible food sensitivities.. They say with some of our special kids, that they may have bowel issues, etc.. and frankly, Ed has had some major ugly bowel movements and I also question lactose intolerance..

I've been told by other moms to try eliminating one thing from his diet.. I just don't know what though.. I mean unless he is sensitive or allergic, is it really realistic to go gluten and cassein free.. chelation scares me although when done and monitored I am sure it is tremendous, the results.. and we all know we want to do the best for our kids! I certainly don't want to come across harsh to those that do and I do commend you for doing that.  I guess I am frustrated and confused at all the unknowns and, there are just so many unanswered questions with these diagnoses and at the same time it has been a gut feeling to take Eddie to an allergist ever since he's been a baby..

I just have to grin and bear it when he asks me "What is PDD-NOS?"  These doctors don't seem to get anything within the autistic spectrum.. drives me nuts!  It is deplorable! It's kind of humorous when you have to explain it to a trained professional of medicine.. I had to go through all of it with his family doctor.. That is scary.. Any thoughts or advice?

There is a total difference between an allergy and sensitivity. Most of these kids are only "sensitive" to foods, etc. Only true "allergies" will be picked up on skin(interdermal) testing. If your child had a true allergy to milk----that would be they would be needing hospital attention(swelling, throat closing up, rash, etc). The intolerances or sensitivities won't show up. You need to get a blood test for IgG antigens. IgE are the other ones for true allergies.

Another test that may be helpful for you is the urine peptides test. It will tell if the child has too much casein or gluten in their urine. Here is a great website on all this info for you:
