I know I am just full of questions today but here is another one:
From my ds's report card it is clear that he has very very poor
organisational and self management skills. How do you teach them? It
seems that the classes the schools offer for students don't start till junior
high. Is that because there is just not enough maturity level before?
Anyone know any good curriculum or exercises?I have wondered about that. "Problems of Executive Function" need creative workarounds for the kids to use ... there are many suggestions for helping kids, I think in Attwood's Guide to Asperger's, and also ? You're Going to Love This Kid?
My oldest son went from being an Oscar to being a Felix (well, sort of) between 1st and 2nd grade. I don't know for certain what happened over the summer that caused him to change his ways, but he was a different kid when 2nd grade started.
These are things his teacher at school did to help him stay organized:
1. The interior of his locker was labelled so he knew exactly where all his stuff was supposed to go.
2. The interior of his desk was labelled so he knew exactly where all his stuff was supposed to go.
3. He had a daily schedule on his desk which he could check off as things were completed. (He loved being able to check things off.)
4. The teacher always reviewed his assignment book and backpack to make sure everything was written down and in order.
5. His teacher used small prizes as motivators for being organized and responsible. A prize was something he could earn over a period of time (like a month).
Adam was very disorganized with his subjects, and his teacher gave him binders for each subject and then labeled them and put everything he needed in each binder including a pencil holder with the appropriate writing instruments, so he only had to take one thing out of his desk.
ex: his math binder had his notebook, his math journal, his number grids and any math papers her needed to do, also a pencil holder with several pencils, and eraser and his compass and calculator.
for English it would be similar etc. She helped him more than me.
