Back from the Developmental Specialist | Autism PDD

I HATE it when I leave with more questions  than I had before the appointment!

She threw me for a loop when she said she felt my DD's behavior and the increase in meltdowns actually might be ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder).  I am not hiding my head in the sand or anything.  I am open to anything lately but how is being freaked out by a bee ODD?  Or the fact you get splashed with the smallest amount of water, how does that equate to ODD?

BUT then again she then went on to say with my DD's "diabetes it might be causing more mood swings."  I looked at her in shock, my DD is not Diabetic and for a brief mill-a-second I thought I missed something.  lol  I told her 'she is not diabetic she has a growth delay" which she responded "let's increase her Risperdal, that will also increase her appetite and will help with growth."  My daughter is not growth because she can NOT produce her own growth hormone.  We give her nightly injections of HGH.  It has NOTHING to do with her lack of appetite (which by the way has become so much better in this past year, her teacher worked with he on trying new foods for 2 years!!)

SO she did nothing for us.  When I called to make an appointment the doctor's nurse was SO GREAT.  She said with DD's ASD diagnosis she was wondering who was working with us on any type of Behavior Modification plan etc.  When I told her I had no clue what she was talking about, and Behavior Modification was only something I had read about, she said "well there is your problem, we need to get you in ASAP."

Well the doctor was clueless I think - and it is frustrating.  I think I have come to a point where I am tired of looking to doctors and specialist for guidance.  I feel like I am just going to have to figure it out on my own!

I can't be the only one that is feeling this way or has felt this way.  So thanks for letting me vent!!

UUmmmm....forgive me for asking, but why are you still seeing this Dr? I would get a new one in a hurry. The Dr. is upposed to know the medical history of your child. Something is wrong when the Dr. thinks your kid has diabetes and she doesn't, something is wrong when the Dr. ASSUMES she is not growing because of her eating when it is actually a medical condition that your child needs injections for. Sounds to me like this Dr. does not go over medical charts and has no clue what is going on. That would send a HUGE red flag to me. I am sorry that you are going throughthis, really I am. But, I would definitely consider getting a new Dr. preferably one that knows about autism. Good luck, keep your chin up!I would check into other options for your daughter because this Dr. seems to not know about your daughter's medical problems...to me, that is scary. I hope you can get what you need for your daughter. I have taken my boys to some REALLY bad Dr's, so I am speaking from exp. Do not be afraid to check out other Dr's or other options...you might be surprised and find their is a much better place to take your kids to. I know that it is very frustrating. Hang in there

I am thinking it might be the best thing to look into new coverage for her our all of us.
