That is so great! I am facing my 5 yr old going to kinder this year and I asked for an aide for him. At the IEP meeting, they said, no to the aide, but they would have someone shadow him for a bit. Still don't know how we're gonna deal with this, though.
That's wonderful! I've very happy it all turned out ok! Good job!
Amber Hi everyone I just got back from Nicks IEP meeting this meeting was to determine where he would be placed this fall, because he will be school age and no longer preschool. Nick has been attending a private school for kids on the spectrum since Feb of this year, and in 6 months has made alot of progress, well sometimes that can hurt you when it comes to the funding. The school he attends is an hour away from home he has door to door service to trasport him...it was the only ABA therapy even close to us, well our school district is the one funing him to attend this school (we are very fortunate from some of the other stories I have heard). So at the meeting yesterday they were really pushing for him to be in the least restrictive enviroment which would be regular ed Kindergarded with an aide. Which I would love to be able to do but he just is not ready ...and I voiced many times through the meeting that he isn't ready. So they tried to strong arm me by telling me that if he stays in the private school for another year (it is usually a 2 yr max anyhow) that they cannot guarentee he will be able to be placed into first grade the following year given that in the first grade they start reading and he would have to sit at a desk and do worksheets also.....so why is he able enough to attend Kindergarden this year but may not be able to go to first the following year?? Makes no sense to me they say he will most likely have to attend Kindergarden next year well so be it if he does. If I send him this year he will take the chance of not being able to handle it and they will hold him back anyhow. I explained to them (the commitee) that the ABA is designed to teach him how to learn or rather get him ready so he can go to regular ed and be able to learn. So why would I deny him another entire year of this therapy and have him go to Kindergarden and fail?? Well when we did the phone conference with the administrator from the private school she stressed how important another year with them would be for him,and when the regular ed kindergarden with a 1to1 aide was mentioned she said that it would be great but....where he is at right now he would go back into his shell and he would use his aide as a crutch and rely on her for everything which would set back all of the progress that they have been making with him!!!! So they decided to continue him at the private school. Sorry if I am rambling I just feel so good that I fought for my son and it worked I have never been the type of person who could stand up for myself or my rights. But when it comes to this little boy and my other children I can become a mother bear!!!!! Thanks for listening. Nita Nita, That is such great news!!! I'm so happy for you that you were able to win this fight!! GOOD FOR YOU!!!
