middle school issues for girls | Autism PDD

is there a separate board for middle school kids particularly girls on here somewhere? No.  But you can certainly post you questions and issues here for comment.  There may be plenty of people reading this who can share, commiserate and advise.Hi, well I am not sure what her real diagnosis is, we think she has a nonverbal learning disability and there are a few asperger signs also, she is very creative, loves art, plays guitar, loves to sing and perform. She also misses social cues, does not have many friends, makes honor roll but it takes a lot for her to stay on it, we are looking for an alternative placement for her in the fall since middle school is not working out for her, it's way too big, and has become too overhwhelming for her with the peer pressure. I am concerned because she is young for her years and I am afraid she will be taken advantage of.

Kayla,

Would love to hear about your girl..I have a almost 7 yr. old girl and dont get a chance to hear about older girls much:) I do have a 16 year old nt teen so I have a little experience with older girls:) Talk to us:)

I have a son PDD-NOS that will be entering middle school in the fall.  We are still trying to decide if we want to send him to a very small private school in our area.  He sounds very similar to your daughter.  Behavior and socialization seem to be his biggest issues at school.  His school refused mods and just suspended him this year.  His fifth grade was set up similar to middle school.  He had 4 different teachers plus all the extras (PE,ART,etc.)  It was horrid! She sounds exactly like my niece, who is Asperger's.  Does she have an IEP?  If not, request that the school do a full educational and functional behavioral analysis immediately (of course, it's summer, and you probably won't find anyone there until mid August).  If she is an Aspie, there are many things that can be implemented at school to help her out so she won't feel so overwhelmed.  My son and niece both have the typical Aspie issue of poor organizational skills, and for my son, having a full-time aide has really helped to keep him organized so he can concentrate on academics.  You should also look into a social skills group in your area (if you are in California, drop me a private message, and I can help more).  Bear in mind that middle school in general are the most difficult years for all children!  There is only so much you can do to fight mother nature and make it easier, but if she is indeed on the spectrum, then getting her the support she needs will definitely make the road a little less bumpy.  For my niece, middle school was hell from beginning to end.  My son has had it a little easier.  6th grade was pure hell, but 7th was actually a very successful year both academically and socially  He can't wait to got back to school to start 8th grade, and it's only June 24th! Hi Kayla...How old is your daughter? My daughter is 11 almost 12 and is deaf, has mild cp & autism. She's in middle school and began her cycle when she was 10. I also work in Daycare for the last 12 almost 13 years. What kind of things are you interested in finding out?
