Has anyone read and used this book | Autism PDD

Maggie, also wanted to let you know that my local library had a copy of it so I was able to check it out from the library for free. If you like it, you could then photocopy the pages that particularly pertained to your situation for future reference. So, you might want to check with your library first.........good luck.

I was recently recommended this book by a friend with 2 kids on the spectrum...her words were "throw all your other books away, this is the best on e out there" (or something close to that).

I haven't bought it yet...but I trust her word completely.

I have read this book. It's a great reference if your child is doing ABA. But, I honestly think if you have a good ABA consultant you don't really need it. If you are going things on your own- it's a great resource. I also checked mine out from our local library. If your local library doesn't have it- you could request them to purchase it. Also our local children's hospital has a Family Resource Center where you can check out books. They have it also.

Have you read- Let me hear your voice by Maurice? That's very good also.

I agree...it's a good resource if you're doing some behavioral therapy at home, and it does have a couple of chapters of useful information in it. I bought it because it was recommended to me by the child psych that did the last eval. on Jakob. He recommended I try some of the exercises in it to get Jakob ready for intensive therapy when we return to the states.(military so we are being reassigned because there's no therapy for Jakob here in Germany). I would definitely try the library first and make photo copies of the pages you'd like to use.

Thanks everyone..

I did not think about the library. It is very small because we are so remote. But they can bring books up from communities not so remote. I will have to call today and see if they can get it.
Thanks

Hi

My hubby and I were thinking about buying the book "Behavioral Intervention for young children with autism" by Catherine Maurice. It is 65.oo cad so before we jump in and get it I was wondering if anyone had read it and if it was useful. Ihave to order it on line and can't get a peak at it first.

Thanks

Hey Maggie, I haven't read the book but heres a link to take a look inside it first.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0890796831/ref=sib_dp_pt/103 -2209801-5325407#reader-link  Just click on the arrows....... Hope it helps!

I just sold my copy on Ebay. I agree with the others that it is a good book to read, but I would try to borrow it if you can. Once I initially read it I really didn't refer back to it too much. If you are doing your own ABA program at home, it does have some programs in it, so that can be helpful. I like the book "A Work in Progress" better for programs though, it has a lot more of them, and I found it to be a more practical book. Catherine Maurice's book talks more about theory, which is good too, but once you know it then you don't have to read it again.

One other thing you might try is borrowing books from your local autism society, many of them maintain libraries of autism books. Our local branch will even mail them out to members.

I know here membership in the autism society is not free.  You have to pay and they don't have a sliding fee scale.  I think it is .00 a year.  But if you are on a limited income, that amount is still very high.

Tammy

Here in my state, to join the Autism Society costs . I also noted when I looked at the Edmonton, Canada Autism Society website, that if you are not a member, you can check out books for an annual fee of , and to join it costs for families and for individuals. (I did not look at all the regional sites however.)

Tabitha,

That is sad that they don't have a sliding scale fee in your state. I know here, if you can't afford the fee, you can still enjoy membership priveleges. Sorry, I didn't know that other states would be so petty.

Well lol Minnesota aint cheap.  I know to go to the conferences they charge you 50 bucks unless someone gives you tickets or passes.  You figured they would.  But who knows what their deal is.

Tammy

we do belong to the Red deer Chapter. Because that is where my in-laws live 12 hours away

And we are going to join the Edmonton chapter too since that is where my sons doctor is (11 hours away)

I called the Library and they are ordering up the book from another town. So we can check it out.

Thanks
